Egypt Presses U.S.
For Arms Allotment;
Acheson Cool "on Bid

WASHINGTON (JTA)—Egypt
has again asked • the United
States for free heavy arms so
that she can "defend herself
and guarantee security for the
Near East" and also furnish the
United Nations for c es with
troops under the new world se7
curity plan, Egyptian Foreign
Minister Mohammed Salah el-.
Din told a press conference at
the Egyptian embassy.
Salah el-Din said that he has
asked Secretary of Defense
George Marshall and Secretary
of State Dean Acheson to in-
clude Egypt among nations re-
ceiving U. S. arms without cost.
He said that Egypt should be
supplied along with Iran, Tur-
key, Greece and other democra-
cies.
Explaining that American
arms would enable Egypt to
participate in a U. N. police
force, Salah el-Din said that
the U. S. should give Egypt arms
proportionate to her strategic
importance, size and population.
The State Department has

eign Minister. Secretary of State
Dean Acheson said at a press

any event, said Mr. Acheson, At- .

Britain Protests Egypt's
Decision to Check Planes
LONDON (JTA)—The British
government is protesting against
the Egyptian - government's de-
cision to check passengers of
planes landing at a British mili-
tary airfield in the Suez Canal
zone as contrary to a 1936
treaty, a Foreign Office spokes-
man announced.
The British Parliament was
told by Minister of Immigration
Holt that property valued, at
pre - war rates, at 10,000,000
pounds and owned by the Tem-
plar Society—whose headquar-
ters are now in Australia—has
been frozen by the Israel gov-
ernment.
The society is composed of
Germans formerly residing in
Palestine. The Australian Gov-
ernment, Mr. Holt said, is press-
ing a "just settlement of the
Templars' claims."
