Religion Criticized as
'Country Club at Prayer'
On Oct. 19, John Day Co. pub-
lished "If This Be Religion" by
Dr. Frederick Keller Stamm.
The central poirit of the book
is that Dr. Stamm, while deeply
religious, attacksthe church for
not following its teachings. He
attacks chiefly the laymen who
run the churches. He tells mine
frankly his own experiences
during 40 years as a minister, as
for instance:
(1) When he supported Al
Al Smith against Hoover.
(2) When he stood by his as-
sistant who was a conscientious
objector.
He attacks the exclusion of
Negroes from the Churches, -pre-
judice against Catholics and
Jews, the snobbery of young
people, and other non-Christian
attitudes.
After forty years as a minister
Dr. Stamm challenges the local
church to become more than a
"country club at prayer." He
