LIFE-Size Work

History of War
A Gigantic Work

"LIFE's Picture History of
World War II," published this
week in Life Magazine size, con-
taining 1,000 pictures and 80,000
words in text and distributed
by Simon & Schuster Publish
ers, not only boasts the largest
printing in the history of book
printing but is one of the most
remarkable history books of its
kind.
It is, as the name indicates, a
history of the war. It also throws
some light on the events which
accompanied war discussions in
this country.
For instance, pictures in this
book -indicate how the America
First Committee operated, how
Charles Lindbergh propagan-
dized against America's entrance
in the war. One of the America
First pictures has the cut-line
stating that "as the U. S. moved
closer to war some isolationists
were revealed as anti-Semites."
And one photograph shows a
battle over Coughlin's "Social
Justice" and his endorsement of
the America First Committee's
activities.
Arthur Tourtellot, who headed
the book's staff, reports that
400,000 copies of this book al-
ready have been distributed, and
that Simon & Schuster are mak-
ing additional copies available
through the trade.
Tourtellot said, "Researchers
have combed the files and cata-
logued indexes of the U.S. Army,
the Navy, the Associated Press,
United Press and other pictorial
syndicates for 'exact moment'
documentation of significant
highlights of the global war."
"In all," Tourtellot .said, "the
preliminary search covered al-
most 500,000 pictures followed by
editorial selection and assign-
ment of text material to a staff
of writers, layout men, carto-
graphers and researchers."
. In a: special preface, Life ed
itor-in-chief Henry R. Luce ded-
icated the book to the "gallant
band of journalists . . . who con-
tributed • so generously to the
historic coverage."
"There are 64 pages of full
color photographs and paintings,
flawlessly reproduced by the new
electronic color scanner, a pro-
cess of making printing plates,
which in original detail, recent-
ly announced by Life. The color
pages will include 105 never be-
fore published pictures in all,
including 69 paintings, of which
25 were captured from the Ger-
mans and two from the Japan-
ese. In addition, almost 80,000
words of text was prepared t o
highlight special events of the
war and bring the pictorial cov-
erage into sharp focus," Tourtel-
lot said.

War Criminal Given
Good Conduct Release

MUNICH,

(JTA)-Baron Er-
nest von Weizsaecker, former
Nazi diplomat, was released
from Landsberg prison by order
of U. S. High Commissioner John
J. McCloy, after serving one-
and-a-half years of a five-year
sentence as a war criminal.
The sentence was commuted
for "good behavior" and after
McCloy's office received numer-
ous letters from persons in many
countries attesting that • the
former Nazi official had protect-
ed many Jews and had attempt-
ed to alleViaete the harshness of
the German occupation of Nor-
Way.
Weizsaecker was convicted in
Nuremberg of deporting 6,000
Jews from France to Poland in
