A South. Carolina Casualty and Yom
Kippur Incident; South vs. East Side

By DAVID SCHWARTZ

(Copyrigt 1950. JTA.)

3. George Fredman is at it
again — gathering data about
Jewish participation in the
Korean war. Fredman, a Jersey
City lawyer, has a hobby of
collecting data on Jews in the
American wars. He is one of
the organizers and a past. leader
of the Jewish. War Veterans or-
ganization and behind the
scenes has been active in other
national veterans organization.
I believe it was Fredman, who
Was largely .responsible for get-
ting the American Legion to
cothe out for the FEPC.
Fredman, calling my attention
the other day to the fact that
Captain Vivien P. Moses, the
Jewish flyer, who was the first
ti lt/ravine flyer killed in Korea was
from South Carolina, made some
interesting remarks.
"If you were to make a study
which state in the Union con-
tributed most Jewish generals,"
Fredman said, "you would prob-
ably find it is the comparatively
small state of South Carolina.
Captain Vivien Moses is true to
the Carolina. Jewish tradition."

Cpl. Abe Geller .

Billy Rose has an interesting
story of an East Side Jewish
`the in the war. The name of
the soldier is Abraham Geller,
the son of a rabbi. It seems
Geller is a very pious young
Jew, always arising before Rev-
eille to "daven."
On Yom Kippur morning,
writes Billy Rose, his command-
ing officer Captain O'Connor,
seeing that Geller had conclud-
ed his prayers, told him to "go
back to the chow truck and get
yourself a cup of coffee."
"Thanks, captain," said Gel-
ler, "but today is Yom Kippur
and I won't eat until sundown."
"You mean to say," said the

memorial to the late Gen. Orde
Wingate., who as commander of
British and Jewish forces in
Palestine during the pre-war

captain, "you're going to fast
the day we burst into Seoul?"
said the captain.
Geller grinned: "I guess I've
got enough calories packed away
for 24 hours."
A few hours later, the Ameri-
cans were marching on. They
came across what looked like a
field of dead men, but some-
times these North Korean men
only play dead. The Jewish
soldier from the East Side saw
one of these dead rise and aim
his gim at Captain O'Connor.
Geller, who was only a few feet
away. jerked his bayonet out
and finished off the enemy
soldier, but he stopped three
bullets intended for the captain.

Punch Line

And it is here where the
punch line comes in. There was
a long delay before the Jewish
soldier was given any penicillin.
The surgeons, when they came
to operate on him, said that if
it weren't for the fact that his
stomach was empty of food, Gel-
ler would not have survived.
The fact that it was Yom Kip-
pur, and he had fasted, had
saved him.
Captain Vivien Moses comes
from South Carolina with its
artistocratic t r a d i tions. The
Sephardic Jews, a kind of elite
of Israel, were its first settlers.
. Geller on the other hand hails
from the rough and tumble East
Side, poor, proletarian, livers in
tenement houses. The former
was bred in an almost complete-
ly assimilated American envir-
onment, the latter in an envir-
onment with an East European
Jewish tradition.
The fact is that the South
Carolina, of the period when it
produced most Jewish officerS,
was very close to the Jewish
tradition which Geller repre-
sents. Captain e Levi Meyer
Harby of .South - Carolina, for
instance, who fought in the
Mexican and Civil Wars, was a
devout, orthodox Jew. The Moses
of South Carolina contributed
much to the martial annals of
South Carolina and Penina
Moses was the author of num-
erous hymns for synagogues;
some of them are still sung.
Perhaps the East Side has not
contributed as many officers
proportionately as South Caro-
lina-but it has contributed many
more privates and a private like
Abraham Geller is as good as an
officer, Captain O'Connor, his
commanding officer, would .prob-
ably be the first to testify.
