Congregational Activities

First Blessing Class in the New Temple Ism

Agudath Israel of Detroit be-
gin their second year of cultural
programs with the first of a
series of ten public gatherings
at 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13, at
their synagogue,' 11331 Linwood.
The series of oneg shabbats
will feature local and guest lec-
turers on subjects of Jewish in-
terest. Forums, debates and
public discussion will highlight
the series.
Rabbi Leizer Levin, Agudath
president, will be the first
speaker on, "How to Prevent a
World Catastrophe Through the
Torah."
Sabbath melodies and re-
freshments will round out the
program.

Post-Holiday Enrollment
Nears Yeshivah Record

Registration is continuing at
Beth- Yehudah Schools, Rabbi
Simcha Wasserman, dean, an-
nounced. Post-holiday enroll-
ments are lifting Beth Yehu-
dah's attendance to near-record
figures.
Classes are still open at all
graded levels. Subjects of in-
struction. include: Hebrew and
Yiddish reading, writing and
composition; Jewish history;
Bible and the Prophets; Tal-
mud, and Jewish customs and
laws. An advanced Talmud
seminar for young women of
college level is also offered.

Dr. Weisman Is Speaker
At Jewish Schools
Unification Ceremony

In a ceremony uniting the
United Jewish Folk Schools with
Sholem Aleichem Institute, Dr.
Shloime Weisman will address
an assembly at 8:30 p.m., Sun-
day at the Detroit Institute of
Arts.
Shoshana Brooks Friedman
will present a musical program.
Dr. Weisman, dean of Jewish
education in Canada who re-
turned recently from a summer
in Israel, will convey the Jewish
Folk Schools system of Jewish
education in Israel, as well as
the school's ideology in the U.
S. and Canada.
Friends of the movement and
parents of school children are
especially invited to attend. The
public is welcome.
Registration is continuing at
the Jewish Folk Schools on Lin-
wood, Monterey and Manor. For
information covering enrollment,
call the main office, TO. 8-9280.

The Blessing Class of 1950, consisting of 71
boys and gills of the ages of 4, 5 and 6, who
have just begun their career of Jewish education
in Temple Israel Religious School.
The ceremony of the Blessing of the Children
by the Rabbi took place on the morning of the
Feast of Conclusion (Shemini Azeres), Oct. 3.

Religious Labor Group
Starts Detroit Campaign
For a Village in Israel

At the rally of the Detroit
Branch of the League for Re-
ligious Labor in Palestine, held
Oct. 6 at the Bnai Moshe, a
campaign was launched in be-
half of a village to be establish-
ed in Palestine by the religious
labor group.
Dr. Joseph Burg, vice-presi-
dent of Knesset, representing
the religious bloc, outlined pres-
ent conditions in Israel and re-
viewed the Jewish state's atti-
tude on the internationalization
of Jerusalem and other prob-
lems.
Rabbi J. S. Sperka presided at
the meeting.
At a press conference preced-
ing the meeting, Dr. Burg point-
ed out that in Israel the minor-
ity groups are allowed a voice
in the open. He pointed out that
of the 120 members of the Par-
liament three are Communists—
one of the an Arab. "Perhaps it
is better to have them and to
know them in the open," he de-
clared.
Dr. Burg said that the religi-
ous bloc believes in free enter-
prise and supports the attitude
of the middle classes on eco-
nomic problems.
