STRATHMOOR-PEMBROKE
Yeshivath Beth Yehudah bal-
anced its budget last year for
the first time in the 10 years
since its expansion, with a sur-
plus of income over expenses
The audit showed a surplus of
$1100 on a budget of $176,000,
which covered the year ending
Sept. 1, 1950. It was prepared by
Marvin Newman, C.P.A. and re-
leased by David I. Berris, Beth
Yehudah, treasurer.
Individual contributions ac-
counted for more than half of
Beth Yehudah's record-breaking
income last year. Large individ-
ual donations, membership dues
and scholarships reached a total
of $67,000. Synagogue appeals
and the Beth Yehudah dinner
and yearbook, which last year
honored lay religious leader
Daniel Temchin, each brought
in over $8,000. Additional con-
tributions were made to me-
morials and kitchen funds.
Additional major items in the
budget were the Jewish Welfare
Federation subsidy of $22,750,
and $10,375 raised by the Ladies
of Yeshivath Beth Yehudah,
who assumed responsibility for
the schools' kindergarten and
nursery and Beth JacOb
school.
Celebrates Store's
50th Anniversary
\t
Joseph J. Kahn, a member of
Bay City Lodge, Bnai Brith, cel-
ebrates the 50th anniversary of
his store in Mikado. Mich., this
year. Now the largest depart-
ment store in the county, he
began his business on what
amounted to a little more than
a shoestring.
Arriving from his native Riga,
in Latvia, at the age of 16, he
became a peddler in New York,
and after four years wandered
to Bay City. He married, bought
himself a horse and wagon and
sold goods to early settlers and
lumber camps in the area.
Today Kahn is known and re-
spected throughout the county
as the "dean" of all its business-
men, and his store is an estab-
lished institution in the lives
cif several generations of Mikado
residents.
