United Nations- World for September is impressive. Devoted
to the State of Israel, the remarkable progress made by the in-
fant nation, in spite of the many obstacles its 'builders must
hurdle, is described in this special issue in a series of articles and
in the advertisements which indicate worldwide interest in Is-
rael's present and future.
It isn't all business—although merchandise is an important
item in Israel's development. It is also a question of ideals. In
the leading article, Israel's Prime - Minister David Ben-Gurion
makes this significant statement:
"It is through the exercise of the people's constructive
genius rather than through victories on the battlefield or in
the conference-room that its heritage will be fully redeemed.
It is only thus that the Jewish people in its own land will b9
transformed into a free cooperative commonwealth of labor
dedicated to the cause of peace and democratic civilization in
the Middle East and in the whole world."

The Big Parley

The pro-Israel national conference of Jewish organizations,
which is scheduled to open on. Oct. 24, will lay the basis for the
eventual formation of a ")friends of Israel" body in which Zionists
and non-Zionists will forget their differences . . . The 2,000 Jewish
leaders from all parts of the country who will attend this historic
conference will witness something which will remind many . of-
them of the time when the Jewish Agency was formed as a part- .
nership between the Zionists and the non-Zionists . . . At that
time, Dr. Chaim Weizmann went out of his way to win over peo-.
pie like Lduis Marshall and Felix Warburg, and now the Israel
goVernment follows the same path with regard to the non-Zionist
leaders of today ... However, while the Jewish Agency represented
political partnership between Zionists and non-Zionists the new
body which may emerge as a result of the conference will be lim-
ited to economic partnership ... In this respect the gathering will
accomplish what the American Jewish Conference failed to ac-
complish . . . It will finally bring all groups of American Jewry
under one roof as far as Israel is concerned . . . This adds another
link in the chain of central Jewish bodies in which all elements --
of American Jewry are in full agreement . , . The first organiza- -
ton which succeeded in bringing into its ranks all elements of
American Jewry was the Joint Distribution Committee . . . The'
United Jewish Appeal was the second major body . . . Little' by: -
little major differences will disappear betWeen the various grdupS '-
active in American Jewish life . . . And the establishment of Israel
will contribute no little in this direction . All indications point ' •
to the fact that the Israel Government wants to see a strong and
united American Jewish community rather than a community
split by jealousy and competitive interests . It took Israel Pre-
mier David Ben-Gurion to actually stimulate the October confer
ence since he believes that a united American JeWry is beneficial
to Israel as well.

Educational Data

Jewish education in the United States is making progress des ,-
pite the fact that it does not get the support and the attention it
deserves . . . This can be seen from data released by the American
Association for Jewish Education in connection with the Jewish
Education Morith now being observed throughout the country ..
Contrary to the prevailing opinion that Jewish children avoid
Jewish schools, the figures of the Association show that the num-
ber' of children attending Jewish schools increases from year to
year ... Today more than 255,000 children are receiving education
in various types of Jewish schools throughout the country . . . The -
proportion of children of school age attending Jewish schools, ac-
cording to community surveys, varies between 18 and 70 percent.
. . The largest enrollment is repotted in Sunday schools where
more than 128,000 children are today receiving their Jewish edu-
cation . . . The week-day schools have about 122,000 children
their classes . . . This includes about 17,000 in the Yiddish schools
and about 19,000 in all-day schools, which are mostly Orthodox ....
There are more than 2,000 Jewish schools of all types throughmit.
the country and they engage about 7,000 teachers . . . The annual
cost of Jewish education is estimated at about $6,000,000 toward
which the Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds last year con-
tributed more than one-third.

Purely Personal

Next to the United States the largest Jewish community on
the American continent is in Argentina . . There are about
400,0100 Jews there and commercial activity there is manifold and
lively . The Argentine Jewish institutions have a fine reputa-
tion, the Jewish press there is conducted on the highest standards
of journalism, and Jewish leadership there is serious and ener-
getic .. . It has long been my desire to see Jewish life there and
get first-hand impressions of developments in that Jewish com-
munity ... I am going to satisfy this desire during the next four
weeks I am off to Argentina for a month ... Good Bye! I will
resume the column next month with a report on what-is-what An
Argentina.
