Mt's. Lewin-Epstein, Hershmans' Guest,
Urges Increased U.S. Aid to Israel

"American Jewry has been
spared the anguish of settling
in Israel the downtrodden of the
earth. Therefore, you must help
us to carry the burden of re-
habilitating the oppressed."
Madeline Lewin-Epstein, Wife
of Dr. Samuel Lewin-Epstein of
Jerusalem (brother of Mrs. A.
M. Hershman), here for a few
days' visit with Dr. and Mrs.
Hershman, made an urgent plea
for increased help from this
country in Israel's serious at-
tempt to keep her doors open to
the incoming immigrants.
Just before she left Israel last
month, Mrs. Lewin-Epstein was
commissioned to go to Aden to
assist in bringing sick Yemenite
children to the Jewish state by
plane. She told of the sufferings
of the Jews now being evacuated
from the backward Yemenite
domain. of the emaciated chil-
dren, of the transporting of 100
Yemenites at a time on a
single plane that ordinarily
could accommodate about 45
passengers.
"They are so thin that four or
five often can be given the
normal seat of a single passen-
ger," she explained.
Speaking in laudatory terms
of the work of the Joint Distri-
bution Committee in Aden, Mrs.
Lewin-Epstein said that modern
hospitals were set up in this
British airport station and that
for the first time in their lives
the Yemenites, after trekking
the desert to escape from their
former homes, are provided with
wholesome food and clothing.
"I have often wondered
what the reactions of Ameri-
can Jews 'would be if one of
those planes — which arrives
daily in Lydda—were to land
in New York," Mrs. Lewin-Ep-
stein said. "Perhaps it Would
encourage American Jews to
increase their gifts, to realize
under what great handicaps
we work, what obstacles we
have to overcome."
The Jerusalemite said that
the people of Israel share gladly
their food rations with the new-
comers, that they are willing to
be subjected to rationing, but
that help must come from the
Jews of America to make it pos-
sible for this work to go on.

to see the job through.

Only cash can avert despair.
Only cash can transport them to Israel and to

Why Cash Is Needed Now

Only cash can provide homes and build a new
life for the immigrants among their own
people in Israel.

Democracy Fails to
Gain in Germany

Democracy has as yet failed
to fill the spiritual vacuum in
post-war Germany and many
tests lie ahead if the goals of
the Western occupation powers
are to be achieved, Prof. Sig-
mund Neumann of Wesleyan
University declared in a pamph-
let published by the Foreign
Policy Association.
The dangers to the existence
of a democratic Germany, Prof.
Neumann said, include the pos-
sible emergence of new "crisis
strata" — large sections of the
population deprived of their
basic needs and aspirations,
impoverished, rootless and em-
bittered. "It was such a group
in the thirties which marked
the fever curve of a sick society
and fell prey to the dictator's
promises of security," he added.
Pointing out that the drive for
national unity has tremendous
power among Germans, he re-
ported that the concept of a
"neutralized" Germany, some-
thing like a greater Switzerland,
also has strong popular appeal.
