Day of Judgment

Yom Kippur is the Day of Judgment. It
is supreme on mankind's calendar because of
its universality, because it embraces the
needs and the problems of the entire world,
because it is distinguished by a quality of
mercy and by the, highest spiritual values.
In the Talmudic tractate "Tosefta Rosh
Hashanah." appears the following telling
sttaement:

"All things are judged on Roth Hashanah,
and their fate is sealed on Yom Kippur, are
the words of Rabbi Meir. Rabbi Judah, in the
name of Rabbi Akiba, says: All things are
judged on Rosh • Hashanah, but the fate of
each and every one of them is sealed in its
proper season; at Passover, the fate of the
grain, at the Feast of Weeks, ,thiet of the fruit
of the tree, and at :the Feast of Booths, that
of rain," -

While these seasonal needs were applied
to the specific .palestinian problems, the
practicality of the judgments 'is- self-evident
The fate that is determinedon Yom Kippur
is not of the Jew alone but of all farmers,
roc of an individual group but of all men.
The. quote'd tractate ,doe not speak of
grain, fruit and trees for Jews but for all
peoples, The verdict is.-as universal as Pray-
er itself.
Thus, Yom Kippur remains the most
universal of all Holy Days. Confession s and
Repentance, stemming from the Hebrew
Holy Day, become applicable to all mankind.
Therefore, on Yom Kippur, we do not
pray merely for a better Jewry but for a
better world. In a. better world, we shall have
a better Israel. In the prayers of -the ap-
proaching Holy Day are emphasized the one-
ness of our world. Humanity's segments,
if isolated, will remain warlike ; universal-
ized, they become factors for good, leading
to peace for all.
/vray this spirit of Yom Kippur and its
prayers embrace all mankind in 5711.

Hadassah's H-Day

Detroit Hadassah's "H-Day" — Sunday,
Sept. 17 — which will be utilized for city-
wide enrollment of new members in the
women's Zionist organization deserves
wide encouragement.
The pioneer- movement in establishing
health- centers and hospitals in Palestine,
now one of the chief motivating factors in
the establishment of a medical school in the
Jewfsh state, Hadassah has rightfully earned
the right to play the role as the "Healing
Hand of Israel."' Wherever one turns' in
Israel, there is a Hadassah child ,welfare or
health center. It has numerous hospitals-and
was responsible for the creation of several
municipal hospitals.

Were there ever Jewish pirates? We knew ,a
Jewish Eskimo (Peter Freuchen, the explorer),
but we are led to the path of a Jewish 'pirate
for the first time by W. L. White (son of the
late William Allen -White) of Emporia, Kan., in
his interesting biography, "Bernard Baruch: Por-
trait of a Citizen," Published by Harcourt, Brace
& Co., 383 Madison Ave., New York 17.
Mr. White contends that the eminent Amer-
ican leader, Bernard Mannes Baruch, ' is a
seventh generation American, great-great-great - .
great-great-grandson of Isaac Rodriquez Mar-
ques. But we are immediately assured that
"after Isaac Marques arrived in
New York in 1696 from the West
Indies, his ships, sailing a tri-
angular course between Africa,

Every self-respecting Jew, every self-repect-
ing American, must ask_ the question as to in-
ference Does Mr. White imply that other Jews -
are not as loyal as me Baruch, that they are
loyal not to American soil but Tel Aviv, that one
must be moved to act in defense of oppressed
only when a monster like Hitler arrives on the
scene? Mr. White makes no mention in his book
to the help given by Mr. Baruch to the Zionist
cause at Lake Success, but he resorts to a wild
reference to Tel Aviv to prove that Mr. Baruch
is better than other Jews, thus slurring 5,000,000
loyal American Jews.
Two paragraphs, which must have been
penned in haste, else they would not have shown
such poor sportsmanship and 'bad taste, spOil
an otherwise interesting book. If Mr. Baruch was
shown the manuscript' before it went to'. the
printers, he shareS guilt with hiS biographer for
the poor spirit of the 'above quotation. We hope
he, at least, is guiltless.P. S. •
