Home Influemce Determines Child's
Attitudes, Prejudice's, Studies Reveal

STATE COLLEGE, Pa., (JTA) tablish "human centers;" per-

---The school, church and state mit schools to remain open dur-

have made little headway in the
fight against prejudice because
these bodies cannot offset the
prejudice which children acquire
in the home, the annual con-
vention of the American Psy-
chological Association was told.
This conclusion was contained
in a report by, Dr. Gordon W.
Allport, prominent Harvard Uni-
versity social psychologist, who
received an award from the So-
ciety for the Psychological Study
of Social Issues for his work in
this field. -
Rabbi Henry E. Kagan, spirit-
ual leader of Sinai Temple, Mt.
Vernon, New York, who is also
a psychologist, reported on a
study he made on changing the
attitude of Christians toward
Jews. His findings, he stated,
were that there is no correla-
tion between objective knowl-
edge of a fact and tolerance.
"Information does not reduce
prejudice," he asserted.

Prejudice Begins As Early
As Five YearS of Age
:. PHILADELPHIA, (JTA)—Pre-
judice in children is set as earl3z ,
as the age of five, six or seven,
a , study undertaken last year
with the cooperation of the
Philadelphia school system has
revealed.
The study, which attempted
to determine whether and to
what extent young children are
aware of racial and religious
groups and young children's at
titudes toward such groups, was
carried on in six schools with
250 children of various racial
and religious groups.
The authors concluded that
children at an early age clearly
reflect adult patterns of rejec-
tion and hostility. The study
revealed that Jewish children
are more concerned with group
belonging than Catholic or Pro,
testant children.

Need for Educators
To Attack Bigotry
MILFORD, Pa. — (JTA) — The
need for educators to "attack
prejudice" in the classroom was
emphasized here by delegates
attending the College-Age In-
ter - G r o u p Conference of the
National Conference of Chris-
tians and Jews.
The conference recommended
that boards . of education in
large and small urban centers
train school and communal
leaders who are "needed to re-
duce intergrotip tensions;"

Agudath Israel Seeks
°Torah Life' for Youth

FERNDALE, N. Y., (JTA)-
Delegates attending the 28th na-
tional convention of Zeirei Agu-
dath Israel—the youth move-
ment of the Orthodox Agudah
organization in this country—
decided to establish an educa-
tional program that "would
train Jewish youth in the U. S.
for an uncompromising Torah
life." The concluding session of
the three-day meeting consid-
ered reports on problems facing
the Agudath Israel in this coun-
try and abroad.
