Detroiter Writes World War II Novel
Showing Sensitivity of Jewish Flyer

Louis Falstein, former De-
troiter, has written a powerful
novel. His "Face of a Hero"
(Harcourt, Brace & Co., 383 Mad-
ison Ave., New York 17), al-
though a novel of the last war,
is certain to have as much ap-
peal today as if it had been
written five years ago, and it
may prbve its magnetism be-
cause of the renewed interest
in our air force as a result of
the Korean war.
"Face of a Hero" describes
the experiences of a crew on a
B-24 bomber. The story is told
in the first person by Ben Isaacs
who is always conscious of his
Jewishness. From the very
moment that he introduces him-
self, he watches for reactions
to his Jewish name, to his faith.
His comrades, learn about pog-
roms in Russia which Ben recalls
from his childhood. At times,
some of the men in the crew
speak of the Jew-war and there
is evidence of prejudice. But
the sensitiveness of the hero is
apparent. Some of his buddies
met in him the first Jew they
had ever seen and in the begin-
ning it confused them.

American Red Mogen Dovid
Issues Membership Appeal

"Face of a Hero" is one of the
most realistic books to come off
the press in recent years. It
deserves a place among the best
books about the last war. Its
strength elevates author Louis
Falstein to a high rank in the
literary field.
