Assimilation Trend
Seen by JDC in Europe
NEW YORK, (JTA) — The
trend toward assimilation and
mixed marriages has become a
serious problem for the Jewish
communities of many Western
European nations, it was report-
ed by the American Jewish
Committee. The report, based on
a survey of Jewish communities
in Western Europe in a special
study by the AJC's European of-
fice in Paris, stated that the
strengthening of Jewish c o m -
munity groups and organizations
is essential to overcome these
problems and to give Jews deep-
er roots in the countries of Wes-
tern Europe.

Historic Trials Describe Labor's
Acquisition of Its Legal Status
Through analyses of 25 of the
outstanding court decisions
which, by evolutionary proces-
ses, shaped the legal position of
labor unions in this country
during the past 150 years, Elias
Lieberman has written a book—
"Unions Before the Bar" (Har-
per)—which makes labor's posi-
tion more understandable. Also:
his book is a fascinating por-
trayal of the development of
trade unions and is replete with
interesting incidents which
make it read like a novel.
Jewish readers will find a
great deal of important mater-
ial relating to the emancipation
of Jewish workers from the
sweatshops to positions of dig-
nity through well organized
unions.
"How Samuel Gompers Was
Saved From Jail: Bucks Stove
and Range Co. v. Gompers" is
one of the cases reviewed in
this book in explanation of the
evolution of labor to a position
of strength.
It is interesting to note that
Mr. Lieberman, one of the ablest
labor lawyers in this country,
has dedicated his book to Mor-
ris Hillquit, who was among the
ablest Jewish labor leaders and
attorneys, and Judge Julian W.
Mack. Dedication of a book of
this type to the former is un-
derstandable, Hillquit having
served the cause of labor for
many years. But many judges
are pictured in Mr. Lieberman's
book as having been hostile to
labor, and this fact makes the
dedication to the late Judge
Mack an indication that at
least this jurist--eminent Zion-
ist, who was president of the
ZOA—was liberal and fair.
"Unions Before the Bar" has
all the qualities of a good text-
book, for use in law schools and
in sociology classes. But its ba-
sic quality is that it was written
for the layman. It provides an
opportunity for every American
to become fully informed with
the true status of labor and its
early struggles.
Mr. Lieberman advocates la-
bor's participation in social
community movements. He is
against the "survival of the fit-
test" approach in solving indus-
trial quarrels and urges positive
programs in adjusting disputes
by means in line with the com-
mon good for all concerned.
Mr. Lieberman, a teacher and
a lawyer, son of a teacher,

$71,255 has already been raised

completed.
The sum raised to date is
more than two and one-half
as much as the final results in
1949, as a result of good organ-.

thorough planning. -
