'Hard Core' Immigrants in Israel

Currency Problem Hits
Newspaper Importers

NEW YORK, (JTA)—The New
York Times announced that it

The United Jewish Appeal's program for the immigration of
the "hard core" of sick and disabled Jews to Israel was fully
under way by the end of 5710. The paralyzed woman shown on
her arrival in Haifa was a member of the first shipload of "hard
core" cases brought to the Jewish state. Transportation for
these handicapped men and women, and their care after arrival,
is financed largely by the Joint Distribution Committee and the
Jewish Agency for Palestine, both operating with funds raised
through the United Jewish Appeal, together with the Government
of Israel. At least 9,000 sick, disabled and aged Jews and their
dependents will be brought to Israel during 5711 under this UJA
program known as "Malben."

is attempting to make arrange-
ments for the acceptance of
Israel currency in payment of
copies of its international air
edition sold in Israel.
The announcement was made
following a report from Jeru-
salem that Israel newspaper im-
porters announced they would
import no more American, Can-
adian or French newspapers and
magazines because the Israel
Government had not granted
them foreign exchange quotas
since February.
The report from Jerusalem
emphasized that Russian publi-
cations are continuing to enter
Israel because the Russians
accept payment in local cur-
rency, the revenue being spent
by the Soviet legation in the
Jewish state. British publica-
tions also continue to arrive,
with the recent agreement for
the release of Israel sterling re-
serves.

HOLIDAY GREETINGS
This tendenz of Jews to a

larger share of the affliction of
the nudnik public speaker.
At a Zionist Congress at which
Max Nordau once presided, one
delegate asked that an hour's

"We can't do it," said Nordau.
"The program is crowded. What
