Gertrude Berg's Kreplach Recipe
By TERRY ELMAN
JNF Works to Make
Garden of Arid Negev
Here is the great reservoir
built by the Jewish National
Fund in the heart of the Negev
for the irrigation of Israel's
most potentially fruitful
wasteland.
The Jewish National Fund
pays special attention to the
Negev, and for good reasons, Dr.
Harris J. Levine, JNF president,
declared in a Rosh Hashanah
statement.
The northern zone of the
Negev is destined to accommo-
date tens of thousands of farm
families and will make a sub-
stantial contribution towards
the settlement problem. In the
Southern Negev the new outlet
to the Red Sea opens up new
vistas for trade and commerce,
engaging in a great pioneering
job.
With JNF aid, irrigation proj-
ects are being carried out, which,
upon completion, will pump fifty
million cubic meters of water
annually to the Negev. An at-
tempt has also been made to
line the Negev, despite its arid-
ity, with rows of trees.

Bigger Israel Profits
NEW YORK, (JTA)—Assets of
AMPAL (A merican Palestine
Trading Corporation) have risen
by $4,000,000 since January and
now stand at $14,000,000, Abra-
ham Dickenstein, president of
AMPAL announced.
Uriel Friedland, managing di-
rector of Israel Oil Industry
Ltd., revealed that he is here to
purchase $400,000 worth of ma-
chinery for the edible oil and
soap departments of his corpor-
ation.
Nahum Verlinsky, director
general of Tnuva, agricultural
products marketing cooperative,
reported "tremendous progress"
in increasing production of
wheat, grains and fodder, point-
ing out that these products are
now planted on 440,000 acres as
compared to 120,000 acres in
1947.
Net earnings of $397,465 and
a growth of capital, surplus and
reserves to $6,846,235 are report-
ed in the 1949 annual report of
the Palestine Economic Corpor-
ation.
Close to $1,000,000 of new capi-
tal was invested in the corpor-
ation during 1949. These funds
were channeled into the Israel
economy through PEC's oper-
ating subsidiaries. In 1949 the
Corporation paid a dividend of
$1 per share to its stockholders.
This represents 4 percent on the
par value of $25. The stock now
sells for $28 a share.
Bank Plans Expansion
LONDON, (JTA)—The Anglo-
Palestine Bank expects to open
new branches in Tel Aviv, Acre
and Lydda, in addition to the
new office scheduled for the
Haifa Bay district, S. S. Hoofien
announced at a general meeting
of the board of directors of the
Bank, at which he and Dr. Ar
thur Hantke were reelected to
the board. The meeting ap-
proved a report on the Bank's
present accounts as well as the
7 percent dividend declared in
addition to the November, 1949,
dividend of 6 per cent.
