Music and Umbrellas
Theme of Bemelmans'
Latest Picture Story
No one could have done
"Sunshine," published by Simon
and Schuster, as well as Lud-
wig Bemelmans.
As usual, the famous author-
artist wrote and illustrated his
book. It is a story about a
landlord who did not want chil-
dren, cats or dogs for the apart-
ment he advertised for rent.
But he rented it to a fine lady
who turned out to be the owner
of a music school. Then came
children and domestic animals.
On top of it, the music . teacher
acquired umbrellas which she
bought in an - auction by mis-
take, using up the available rent
money.
But she sold the umbrellas,
made a profit, the school went
on and eventually the landlord
came back pleading that he
loved the youngsters and the
animals—and all turned out
well.
The fine illustrations and the
entertaining story won for
"Sunshine" the Herald Tribune
Children's Spring Book Festival
award. This book is remarkable
from many viewpoints. The il-
lustrations, ably executed, re-
veal Bemelmans' viewpoint of
New York. On the front cover
is Lower Manhattan and the
Statue of Liberty viewed from
a Staten Island Ferry. Midtown
Manhattan is shown from the
end sheets. Gramercy Park, City
Hall, Brooklyn Bridge, Empire
State Building, LaGuardia Field,
a subway map are among the
48 pages of pictures, 16 of them
in full color.
"Sunshine" is one of Bemel-
mans' best works—and that is
saying a great deal when refer-
ring to the popular writer and
illustrator.
`Jerusalem' : Brilliant
Work by Dr. Rosmarin
Tourists in Israel will find Dr.
Trude Weiss-Rosmarin's "Jeru-
salem" (published by Philoso-
phical Library, 15 E. 40th St.,
New York 16) a valuable guide
during their stay in the Holy
City. But the book's worth is not
limited. On the contrary, it has
great merit from an historical
point of view. As history it is
one of the best works produced
about a single city in Israel and
it should serve as a forerunner
for similar historical analyses of
other cities—Tel Aviv-Haifa,
Safed, Tiberias, Beer Sheba and
other Israeli communities.
Dr. Rosmarin, who already
has earned herself an important
place in Jewish literary ranks,
may well count this little book
among the best she has pro-
duced. Jerusalem's complete
story is related here. Opening
her outline with data in pre-
Biblical days, she tells Jeru-
salem's story in Biblical times,
the era after the Second Des
truction of the Temple and
since that time.
Interesting chapters in this
volume deal with Jerusalem in
Jewish history, . the Holy Places,
the New City which has been
created in the periods of new
Jewish migrations to Palestine,
the Jewish pilgrims and set-
tlers.
Commenting on the interna-
tionalization proposals, Dr. Ros-
marin show`s that the plan is
unworkable, that the city's place
in the Jewish spiritual-religious
pattern is a "destiny-fixed and
character - determined fact."
A chronological table on Jeru-
salem's history will prove very
valuable to the reader and to
the student of history.
. The late Daniel Frisch, as
president of the ZOA, had an
opportunity to read Dr. Rosmar-
in's manuscript on Jerusalem
before his death. He wrote the
introduction to the book, adding
an interesting chapter to this
fine work which deserves a
place in every Jewish home.
Hanukah is the only Jewish
festival of which we know ex-
actly when it was first observed.

TEL AVIV, (JTA)—The World
Zionist Organization is doomed
to failure unless Zionists out-
side of Israel create an organ-
ized movement completely inde-
pendent of Israel, Dr. Sami
Groneman, veteran Zionist lead-
er and })resident of the court of
the World Zionist Congress, de-
clared in an article in Yediot
Aharonet.
Dr. Groneman advocated re-
moval of the executive of the
World Zionist movement and the
World Zionist Congress from
Israel. He urged that Israel
Zionists be denied the right to
vote in the World Zionist move-
ment, but continue to be re-
sponsible for the purchase of
shekels and membership in the
organization. He suggested that
