Year of Peace And of Goodness

This is the season of the year
when our thoughts turn to the
joyful things of life; when, even
though there are threatening
shadows, our heartS feel only
gratitude. "May this be a year
of goodness and peace," we say,
one to the other, "a year of
realization and of spirit u a 1
prosperity."
This is the hour, too, when
we draw close again to the
fountainhead of our faith. Re-
verently we seek communion
with God—and with ourselves.
However faltering our belief, we
wend our way toward the sanc-
tuary—testifying thus to a vic-
torious survival of imp u 1 s e s
that, born of the past — long
gone and buried in the niches
of memory, are ever precious
and alive.
It is not "just sentiment" that
impels us to observe the holy
days. Not merely a tribute to
pious. f a t h e r s and mothers.
There is something more . . .
vague perhaps, but vitaly com-
pelling; something that banish-
es doubt and carries light. into
confused and troubled • minds,
and humbles men in the pres-
ence of the Great Mystery. It
may be the realization that.hu-
man life is, after all, borne on
the wings of fate . . . part of
the majestic drama that is
being enacted on this earthly
scene.
It is a day, also, for retrospec-
tion, for casting aside pretense
and vanity and self-deCeption.
A day to balance our accom-
plishments, and • the satisfac-
tions We gained in the past,
against Time's disillusionments
—our victories against our fail-
ures. If our self-appraisal is
honest. and if we are willing to
shed the trappings of conven-
tion and sacrifice some of the
meaningless things which we so
carelessly offer to pride . . . if

we choose the simple, modest
way of life: then the day is no
longer one of mere sentimental
pretense, but takes on spiritual
significance.
Then, with cleaner hearts,
with nobler earnestness, may we
intone the plea: "Inscribe us in
the Book of Life, and grant
unto us a Year of Happiness!"

TEL AVIV — A demand that
the Israel government dissolve
and hold another national elec-
tion within the next six months
was voiced here last week-end
in a resolution adopted at the
conclusion of a meeting of the
national council of the right
wing Herut party.
The demand was based on two
points: The government's fail-
ure to conclude peace with the
Arab states and its failure to
achieve satisfactory absorption
of the large-scale ithmigration.
The resolution pointed out that
as far as the Arab situation was
concerned there was continuous
bloodshed along the borders of
the Jewish state. Concerning
immigration, it pointed to the
e c o n o - m i c dislocation in the
country, asserting that Israel is
on the "verge of economic col-
lapse."
The meeting also issued an
iappeal to Herut members in Is-
rael a n d Zionist - Revisionists
throughout the world to "pre-
pare seriously" for the forth-
coming World Zionist Congress
and to make certain that the
R ev is i o n i s t representation is
large enough "to convert the
World Zionist Organization into
a political instrument capable
of giving comprehensive aid to
world Jewry and introducing a
new relationship between the
Jewish state and the Jewish
people."
