Arab, Jewish Teachers
End Summer Institute
NAZARETH, (ISI)—More than
300 Arab and Jewish teachers
have completed a two week
summer institute •here, studying
zoology, music, physical train-
ing, grammar, reading and
writing.
It was the first annual sum-
mer course for 270 of the coun-
try's 350 teachers in the Gov-
ernment's Arab schools. The
morning were devoted to -
studies, and in the afternoons
Jewish experts, speaking fluent
Arabic, lectured on pedagogic
and administration problems.
Fifty Jewish instructors who
teach Arabic in Hebrew eleinei1*-
tary and secondary schools took
a one-week refresher course in
Arabic composition, literature,
reading and writing. Both cours-
es were under the supervision
of the Ministry of Education.
Senior Arab teachers and school
inspectors taught the Jewish
teachers who were joined by
large groups of Nazareth resi-
dents.
With the implementation of
the compulsory education law
there is a shortage of 250 to 300
Arab teachers. In some Arab
areas morning and afternoon
classes will have to be intro-
duced to overcome shortage of
classrooms. A less serious short-
age occurs among the ranks of
Jewish teachers of Arabic, but
20 more are needed for Hebrew
schools.
Salaries of Arab teachers are
the same during the Mandate,
but the government has recently
agreed to pay its Arab teachers
a IL.10 monthly allowance un-
til regrading has been arranged.
`Diplomatic Representatives
Seen for Brazil, Israel
SAO PAULO, Brazil (JTA)—
'the establishment of full diplo-
matic relations between Israel
and Brazil through the exchange
of ministers between the two
states was predicted here by
Dr. Abraham Drapkin, of the
Latin-American Department of
the Israel Foreign Office.
Although Brazil has extended
de jure recognition to Israel,
there is only an "Honorary Is-
rael Consul" in Rio de Janeiro
and no Brazilian envoy in Tel
Aviv. Before he left, Dr. Drap-
kin expressed appreciation for
the reception he had received
from members of the Brazilian
Government.
