A new novelist, Beatrice Levin,
has been accepted with keen in-
terest by her publishers, Bobbs-
Merrill Co. of Indianapolis, who
have just issued her first long
story, "The Lonely Room."
It is an interesting tale about
a Jewish girl, her loneliness, her
love affair, her service in the
WAC d u r i n g the war, her
struggle with family over an im-
pending intermarriage.
Beth (Becky) Brickman, our
heroine, has ambitions. So have
her parents. She wants to go to
college—and does—and her par-
ents want her to marry.
The conflicts that plague her
do not evidence too keen an un-
derstanding of Jewish life, al-
though Miss Levin certainly is
not totally ignorant of Jewish
conditions. But when she has
her heroine say—in the early
stages of the book, to her non-
Jewish lover, that the religion_
of her parents "is a kind of sup-
erstition, almost—a bigotry, ac-
tually—but to make them happy
I've got to marry a Jew, in name,
anyway"—she certainly reveals
a rather mediocre knowledge of
Jewishness which she seeks to
portray in a full-length novel.
"The Lonely Room" has much
to recommend it. There are in-
teresting references to war ex-
periences. The psychological con-
flicts in the heart of a young
Jewish girl are most interesting.
The young writer displays an
ability to write well and she
may have a good future. But
her initial effort, especially in
view of the rather naive ap-
proach to the anti-Semitic prob-
lem, and her shallow view of the
Jewish way of life, reduces the
importance of her book. An in-
vitation to her non-Jewish lover
to a Friday night dinner, to be-
come acquainted with her fam-
ily, does not restore glory to the
Jewish aspect of this work.

Toscanini's Baton
On Block for UJA
Toscanini's baton was on the
auction block recently for the
benefit of the Cleveland Jewish
Welfare Fund, which raises
funds for the United Jewish Ap-
peal in Ohio's largest city.
The baton used by the Maestro
at a concert the previous night
was given to the highest bidder
at the Welfare Fund's . . closing
dinner. All bids were considered
pledges to the Fund drive.
Toscanani's batons . are made
especially for him by a personal
friend, who is a practicing
physician, and does woodwork-
ing as a hobby. They are rela-
tively light in weight and more
"' slender in design than the usual
