Humor Is Called 'Most Natural Endowment,'
A Tonic for Humanity, in Dr. Gordan's Book
"A sense of humor is not mere-
ly an ornamental trimming. It
is an integral part of the very
fabric of life. It is not the sugar
frosting on the cake of life.'
Rather is it the grain and the
flour of our daily bread. In short,
humor is philosophy. The two;
pointed out by Will Durant, are
intrinsically related. One is the
essence of the other."
This is the definition of
humor given by Rabbi Julius
Gordon of St. Louis in his book,
"Your Sense of Humor: A Guide
to a •Happy Life," published by
Didier, New York.
The St. Louis rabbi writes on
the general theme. It is a
universal rather than strictly
a Jewish book. All gamuts of
life are covered in the subject
as it is approached by Dr. Gor-
don.
All the experiences of a man
in the publit have been- gathered
to provide material for this
work, and the human relations
touched upon should prove of
value to people with problems.
Thus, the book discusses self-
satire as a means of avoiding
cynicism. It deals with love and
laughter and the lack of humor
in modern marriage. It touches
upon friendship and the fun in
human relations. and it does not
avoid reference to good will and
humor, pointing out that to rec-
ognize man as our brother "is
tolerance plus humor, and it is
such tolerance that creates men
of good will and good will to
men."
Holiday humor, health and
fun, food and humor and a score
of other aproaches are included
in Rabbi Gordon's discussion. In
the concluding chapter, "Can We
Cultivate a Sense of Humor," he
makes some practical sugges-
tions. He writes "that everyone
can contribute to the recupera-
tion of a sick humanity by
sharing his gift of humor with
others" and calls "humor our
most natural endowment!"
The European Mizrachi Confer-
ence concluded with the adop-
ton of a resolution calling on
the membership of the entire
Mizrachi movement to devote it-
self to solidifying the founda-
tions of the Jewish state which,
the resolution said, "needs the
mass immigration of all tradi-
tionally-minded Jews."
In a series of other resolu-
tions, the parley" deplored the
Israel Government's negative
attitude on matters dealing with
religious principles, particularly
the matter of Sabbath observ-
ance and the importation of
non-Kosher meat. The dele-
gates also expressed regret that
Israel's economic policy is
"alienating" private capital and
enterprise.
The conference also called for
