Auster Explains Stand
On Internationalization
LONDON, (JTA)—Mayor Dan-
iel Auster of Jerusalem, here en
route to The Hague to attend
the International Conference of
Mayors meeting, explained the
political and economic reasons
for Jerusalem's resistance to in-
ternationalization. He said in-
ternational control of Jerusalem,
"by ignoring the will of the pop-
ulation, is contrary to the Unit-
ed Nations Charter and the right
to self-determination."
Replying to questions concern-
ing the Neturei Karta--the ul-
tra-Orthodox religious sect op-
posed to the Israel Government
—Mayor Auster said the group
is "completely insignificant" and
added that the Jerusalem mu-
nicipality is now studying the
introduction of Sabbath observ-
ance laws covering the closing
of stores and the halting of
vehicular traffic on Saturdays.
