New Zealand Jewish Community Lives
In. Security, Orthodoxy, Zionism

The Zionist Organization of
Detroit feted New Zealand's
foremost Zionist leader, Isaac
Gotlieb, Tuesday at the Tuller
Hotel.
Leading Detroit Zionists were
present at the luncheon in the
Gotliebs' honor and A. C. Lap-
pin, ZOD president, presided.
Gotlieb outlined the new tasks
facing Zionism and declared
that now, more than ever be-
fore, the movement should be
strengthened.
The man from "Down Under"
and his wife are on their second
world tour, in observance of
their silver wedding anniver-
sary. Accompanying them is
their eldest daughter, Denise.
A smiling, graying man, Got-
lieb is president of the Zionist
Organization of New . Zealand,
which he helped found, and has
held office in every Zionist
group the 4,000 Jewish Anzacs
have organized.

G ot lie b, who emigrated
from Latvia in 1897 to Eng-
land and moved to New Zea-
land in 1910, described his
country as a good place to
live. "One in which there is
very little competition for a
livelihood where we have no
`poor' and where Jews have
thrived without the dread of
anti-Semitism."

He described New Zealand's
Jews as Orthodox, "but not
strictly so," whose forebearers
were among the early pioneers,
the first Jews settling in the
capital, Wellington, in 1840.
Jews have held high govern-
ment posts in the islands, in-
cluding that of Prime Minister,
held by Julius Vogel in the late
1800s. Vogel is credited with na-
tionalizing the railroads and in-
troducing socialism to the coun-
try.
There are four main synago-
gues in use today, all Orthodox,
and deserted synagogues are
found in the ghost towns of gold
rush days, a monument to the
early Jewish pioneers.

said, "has been in driblets. But
there is a strong youth aliyah
movement in the Habonim."
Since Hitler's advent, 1500 re-
fugee Jews settled in New Zea-
land. Though the community
has a welfare fund, and did help
the refugee establish themselves,
there is no call on its resources
today, a tribute to the refugees
and to the prosperous economy
of the country.
"The emigrants are divided,"
stated Gotlieb, "into those world
would lose their Jewishness en-
tirely, and those who identify
themselves with the community.
Actually, 'there is no need for
hiding one's Jewishness. There
is no social or economic friction
for anti-Semitism. We Jews are
fully accepted, our people hav-
ing helped pioneer the country."
While in Detroit the Gotliebs
stayed at the home of William
Hoffman of LaSalle Blvd., whose
son, Dr. Max Hoffman, met the
Gotlieb's during the war, when
stationed in New Zealand.
From the United States the
Gotliebs will tour Europe and
Israel, where they will attend
the WOrld Zionist Congress in
Jerusalem before returning to
their home in New Zealand and
their younger son and daugh-
ter.

The Jewish War Veterans, in
an unprecedented move, sus-
pended Mrs. Lillian R. Narins,

tions being circulated here.
The suspension of Mrs. Na-
rins, a 38-year-old former
school teacher who last year
ran for City Council on the
