Temple Israel Announces Building
Will Be Open for High Holy Days

The building of Temple Israel,
which has been in process of
construction for the past _year.
will be ready to house its first
High Holy Day services begin-
ning Rash Hashanah eve, Mon-
day night, Sept. 11, Harry Le-
Vine, president, revealed this
week.
Located in the Palmer Park
section at Manderson and Mer-
ton Rds., one block east of Pont-
chartrain Blvd., and one block
north Of Six Mile Rd., the circu-
lar, white Indiana limestone
edifice was designed by William
E. Kapp, architect, and built by
the Lerner-Linden Construction
Co. The seating capacity of the
'n\-4 worship audi-
torium is 1,500.

sary of his ministry in Detroit.
A liberal Jewish congregation,
it has a membership of 800 fam-
ilies, and a religious school en-
rollment of 800 children.

the building fund campaign
committee which has been rais-
ing $650,000, cost of the build-

supervised the construction.

Young Israel Opens Arts Program;
Mrs. Werbe Will Serve as Director

Mrs. David B. Werbe, noted
Detroit artist, has been engaged
as director of the Young Israel
art program for the coming
year. Development of the School
of Fine Arts in the Young Israel
Center was ratified by the board
of directors at its meeting Aug.
9.
Mrs. Werbe is chairman of
the board • and past president
of the National Arts Associa-
tion; vice president. of the De-

troit Fine Arts Alliance; life-
governing member of the De-
troit Museum of Art Founders
Association, and a past officer
of the Alumni of the Art In-
stitute Association of Chicago.
Mrs. Werbe's works have been
exhibited at the Butler Museum

Northwest Signs
Building Contract
For Synagogue

Northwest Hebrew Congrega-
tion took another step forward
in the development of its com-
pleted synagogue, when it re-
tained the Lerner-Linden Con-
struction Co., as general con-
tractors for the building of the
main synagogue over the pres-
ent social hall.
The chapel will seat close to
1700 people. The yestibule will
be circular. The dome over the
entrance will be surmounted by
a tablet bearing the"Ten Com-
mandments. It is expected that
the building will take approxi-
mately nine months to complete.
The beginning of the main
synagogiie is the final phase of
Northwest Congregation's physi-
cal growth which began with its
formation in 1944. Ground-
breaking for the social hall took
place in November, 1945. Succes-
sive phases of the building have
encompassed the creation of an
auditorium and social hall seat-
ing 1800 members. A large kitch-
en is on the premise.
The second phase of the build-
ing was the school, completed
in 1948, which has been in 'use
for the past year, by the re-
ligious school of the congrega-
tion and the United Hebrew
Schools of Detroit.

berg of the seniors. More than
40 fathers and sons were pres-
ent.
Rabbi Prero will deliver the
concluding lecture on Ethics of
the Fathers at 6 p.m. Saturday,
Aug. 19.

Holiday Tickets
Now Available
At Synagogues

• Special arrangements for the
High Holy Days, which begin
Monday evening, Sept. 11, are
being announced by Detroit
synagogues.
A number of congregations
will sponsor supplementary ser-
vices in their social halls. The
latter practice has been accen-
tuated within the past three
years, in a movement to elimi-
nate the "mushroom" syna-
gogues which spring up at the
' holiday season:
The -H i g h Holiday seating
committee of Cong. Beth Abra-
ham will be in the synagogue
on Linwood between Sturtevant
and Fullerton, on Sunday, Aug.
20 from 4 to 7:30 p.m., to distri-
bute and reserve seats for mem-
bers and friends who worship
at Beth Abraham in the main
synagogue, as well as for the
auxiliary services in the social
hall. After Aug. 20 a seating
committee will be in attendance
daily from '7 to 10 p.m., and on
Sundays after 4 p.m.
As in former years, Cong.
Bnai Moshe will hold supple-
mentary services on Rosh Hash-
anah and Yom Kippur. The
services will be conducted by
Rabbi Julius Weinberg and Can-
tor Samuel Glantz, in the
newly-decorated social hall. Ad-
mission cards will be available
at the synagogue office begin-
ning Sunday, Aug. 20.
High, holiday services—at the
Young Israel Center will be con-
ducted in the air conditioned
-auditorium. Special junior serv-
ices for boys and girls of the
community also will be held.
Cantor S. Kelerman of Tor-
onto has been engaged by Cong.
Adas Yeshdrun to chant the
High Holy Day services. The
ticket committee will be at the
synagogue daily. Rabbi Leo
Goldman will officiate and
preach the sermons.

•Young Israel has inaugurated
a father and sons religious
service at its Dexter and Fuller-
ton Center.
The' Sunday morning pro-
grams will include a short ad-
dress by Rabbi Samuel Prero on
the application of Jewish law to
everyday living. The intermedi-
ates of Young Israel will sponsor
a breakfast, followed by an
athletic program to which boys
18 to 21 are invited.

Building is Ready

The new synagogue of Cong.
Ahavas Achim will be completed
in time for Rosh Hashanah
services, the congregation offic-
ers announced this week.
Located on Schaefer Rd., just
north of Seven Mile Rd., the
new building will house 500
worshippers. Conservative serv-
ices wilt be conducted.
