10—THE JEWISH NEWS Our Letter Box Friday, August 18, 1950 !One Man Juries Are Bad' jury prosecution are a matter By JACK GOLDMAN Editor, The Jewish News: The Detroit Times recently published an editorial which deserves the attention of the entire community and of Ameri- cans everywhere. It exposes wrong procedure and calls for emphasis on fair play in our courtrooms. The Times, under the heading "One-Man Juries Are Bad", stated: "The people of Michigan at last have had exposed before them the money, whisky and women "justice" which was pos- sible • in the happily discarded one-man grand jury system. Step by step it has been testified in Ingham County cir- cuit court the way in which Charles F. Hemans was per- suaded to testify against those named defendants by the grand jury-a grand jury which, in- cidentally, elected a . governor. "Hemans, a confessed crimi- nal, was paid a comfortable `salary' from Michigan taxpay- ers, a 'salary' far in excess of that which most of the taxpay- ers earn by hard work. "Hemans, a confessed crimi- nal, was supplied with drinkin' whiskey in addition to his other luxuries which included a jaunt to Mexico - on state gasoline during the days of gas ration- ing - and more comfortable hotel accommodations than most taxpayers will ever see. "And this - and more - was testified by witnesses before the circuit court in Mason in an ek- posure of the power invested in the secret one-man grand jury. "The situation would be lu- dicrous-if it weren't such an insult to the people of Michigan. "One-man grand jury methods are being paraded before the court by two men convicted on the evidence amassed by that grand jury and by testimony of the much feted criminal, He- mans. "Legal matters of the hear- ing remain for the courts to de- cide. "But moral issues arising from exposure of one-man grand Aug. 11-To Mr. and. Mrs. Norman E. When the war between brutal Hitler and the civilized Western Nations was ravaging, I took special interest in the study of the causes of the downfall of Judaism and other religions, as it was apparent in the European countries during the last sev- eral decades. Fate brought into my hands an authenticc statistic of the results of expanded missionary work, on behalf of Jewish con- version. There, I found facts which nobody can deny. They, together with others that I have witnessed, resulted into the for- mation of my own philosophy on this important matter which I developed in a treatise: "A Short Contribution to the En- lightment About Baptism." It is waiting to be translated into English. I take the liberty to say, here, the following: Woe, to those who waken up too late to the consequences, which threaten the happiness of every Jew, when he or she considers baptism! I recommend -them to study objectively and thoroughly all involved questions, before decid- ing to drop one's own faith and step into a strange psychological world. In my opinion, two major reasons induce the modern Jew to get baptised: First-The hope of gain of personal advantages in busi- ness or career; Second-Love for a Gentile. Both incidents have brought about all-out disillusionment for the unfaithful Jew. The only answer to all social problems is: Advancement in education, because we also have to take into consideration two other important developments in 'history: Fanaticism and too much Liberalism. Both are dangerous in regard to human nature, on behalf of religion. Mankind has to choose the golden middle way. This does not involve compromise; it implies the exclusion of miscon- ception of some circles in society, to consider that the fruit was grown, before its seed was planted. They plucked the fruit, ceased to water the plant, and let the seed dry. The perfect fruit was hung on the tree, on top of the Some grabbed it, and rant down with it into the valley, in Order to show it to mankind. In the ensuing quarrel for the posses- sion of this most precious trea- sure-it got lost! We are the victims of the consequences! Let's look for that treasure! Let's go up the hill again!
