Civil Rights Congress
Denies JCC Charges

The Civil Rights Congress of
Michigan, replying by lettter to
charges 'of the Jewish Com-
munity Coimcil that it was dup-
ing the public by circulating
Peace Petitions, has answered
that it has asked for concerted
or independent action in the
cause of Civil Rights in several
instances which were important
and pertinent to the interests
of all Americans and Jews.
The Civil Rights Congress re-
futed also the "hoary argument"
that it is on the Attorney Gen-
eral's subversive list. The let-
ter charged that the action
placing it in the list was ar-
bitrary, in that no hearings or
evidence of its being Com-
munist has ever been presented,
and that it is the victim of red-
baiting.
The letter was signed by Jack
Raskin, and Anne Shore, ex-
ecutive secretary and adminis-
trative secretary of the Civil
Rights Congress, respectively.

New Record Has Two Songs
By Cantor George Wagner

A new Yiddish record, just
issued by Apollo Records, Inc.,
457 W. 57th St., New York, re-
vives nostalgic feelings about
the Old World and—on its re-
verse side—has an optimistic
note about Israel's future,
Cantor George Wagner, the
soloist, He
a pleasant
voice. He is assisted by the Abe
Schwartz Orchestra.
One side of this record has
the song "Lost Town" ("Far-
lorene Shtetele"), and deals with
the community left behind by
immigrants from Europe. The
other song, "The Lively Jew"
rFreilicher Yid"), is more
rhythmic in its happy tone.

Special Excursion Rates
Offered to State Fair

James D. Friel, general man-

first time in Michigan State
Fair history, 100 per cent of the
Michigan railroads and bus lines
into Detroit will be offering
specW excursion rates to the
State Fair, Sept. 1 through 10.
Friel said he was hopeful that
bargain transportation rates
would bring thousands of out-
Staters to the State Fair for the
first time.

Four candidates, actual and

5th District, in order to throw
their support behind Leon A.
Cousens, as the candidate most
likely to -unseat the incumbent,
Charles S. Blond Y.
Cousens, who has the support
of Americans for Democratic
Action, is being backed by Ed-
ward Shulman, who had filed
petitions -with more than suf-
ficient signatures to place him
on the primary ballot, and later
withdrew; by Leonard P. Ba-
ruch, who withdrew his peti-
tions in order to support Cous-
ens;. by Morris Goldberg, who
had intended to run until he
learned that Cousens was avail-
able; and by Nathan J. Kauf-
man.
Goldberg declared that he was
delighted when he learned that
Cousens was in the race, and
gladly abandoned his. own plans
to run. He charges that "it has
been a shame how badly our
district has been. represented in
Lansing."
Baruch said "My - interest in
good government prompts me
to support Cousens because his
program is essentially the same
as the one I would have pro-
posed had I been a candidate."
