By GEORGE MARCIA The Drivespring RESILIENCE: Quality of re taining shape or form unde r Stress; or of returning to t4 e original shape after stress. —Webster wave/RIF 16 Editor's Note: Thi: is another article in the series by George Marcia, Christian Detroiter now living in Jerusalem, Israel, specially written for The Jewish News. drivespring of the miracle that is Israel, and these lines are written in the belief that we have seen that force at work in Jerusalem. Incidence Proving Resilience The Monastery of Notre Dame de France forms part of the boundary between "Jewish" and "Arab" Jerusalem, one of its facades being in No-man's-land. The houes opposite this facade, liNever, are occupied by Jewish citizenry, who go about their everyday affairS exactly as though they were not covered night and day by Arab guns. A man was killed here a few days ago, by a "stray" bullet from those invisible guns. The authorities, for their own offi- cial purposes, assumed an acci- dent, though, the people who live here have their own ideas . . . Visiting the spot where this man died, we -saw no armed guard, no tense watch, no fear. We saw, instead, a little girl of eight or so, skipping rope and singing to herself in the after- noon sun. That is resilience, and that is why Israel is a fact. — THE JEWISH NEWS Friday, August 11, 1950 Israeli Complains of,, Brutalities As Arab Prisoner Tuchow to Star in Bogart Vehicle; Warner Brothers Signs Local Actor By AVRUM SCHULZINGER The story of Lawrence Tolan is that of an ambitious young rrran who wouldn't give up, and who over-night finds himself at the brink of Hollywood stardom. And Lawrence Tolan's story is really that of Seymour Tuchow, his real name, a Detroit boy, well-known for his activities at Wayne Univer- sity and with t h e Repertory Actors Company he helped found here in 1948. Hollywood col- umnists last week sprung the surprise story of Se y m our's S. Tuchow being signed by Warner Brothers to star in "The Enforcers" with Humphrey Bogart. The 24-year old thespian was scouted by Solly Baiano, head of Warner Bros. casting office and chief talent scout, at Stan- ford University, where Seymour was acting under a fellowship. Baiano, impressed with Tu- chow's ability, whisked him from the campus at Palo Alto to the .Warner lot in Hollywood for an immediate screen test. The re- sult, sell, as Jack Warner, head of WB said, "This boy is fabu- lous." More fabulous, he was given immediate star billing, though totally unknown. Entered Radio at 17 Seymour first gained attention while a student at Central High School, where he acted in nu- merous productions and special school events. In 1943, at 17, he entered radio, holding down the now defunct "Corn 'til Morn" show, twirling platters and mak- ing small talk in the wee hours over WJBK. After that came chores in spots with the "Lone Ranger"; and he powered. the sleek Black Beauty as "Kato" for the "Green Hornet." He was once picked as one of five final- ists in a nation-wide hunt to find a successor for Ezra Stone as Henry Aldrich; in 1948 when he launched a fruitless bid for success on Broadway he almost landed in a Florida film project —but at 23 was considered too old for the part. Ill health later prevented his accepting a part with the Margaret Webster Shakespeare Touring Co. Boy Who Wouldn't Give Up Things are moving in high gear -for Seymour now. In New York he'd hounded agencies and agents to beat the drums for him; as he told his father, Mor- ris Tuchow, in a recent tele- phone conversation: "It's a mir- acle. Imagine. Agents breaking the phone to get me!" To Seymour's family, his fath- er, Morris, mother, Gertrude, and brother, Jerry, who reside at 3017 Buena Vista, his success is amazingly sudden, but not surprising. "He was a boy who wouldn't give up. He knew a lot of other boys and girls want Broadway and Hollywood," said his father, "but he knew he would get that one break to make good."'
