Hebraist Persky's
Essays Treat Wide
Range of Subjects

Ry BERNARD ISAACS
In 1935, when Daniel Persky's
25th jubilee was celebrated, a
group of Hebrew writers (head-
ed by Menachem Ribolow and
the late Abraham Goldberg)
published a collection of Per-
sky's short essays entitled "To
a Thousand Friends." At the
request of many of Persky's ad-
mirers, it has now been reprint-
ed in a popular edition.
This book consists of 95 pages
and as many brief articles deal-
ing With personal observations
and reflections. In his treat-
ment of subject matter, Persky
reminds one of the famous He-
brew short-story writer, G.
Shufman, who, in turn, has been
influenced greatly by the Ger-
man classic sketch-writer, Peter
Altenberg.
In this brief review, it is my
intention to give an abridged
content of a few of Persky's
essays and in this manner ac-
quaint the reader with one of
Persky's literary works. Persky
is very unique not only in his
choice of material but also in
his choice of titles. One of his
rather lengthy essays is entitled
"Between Me and Myself." Here
he talks about his love for the
Hebrew language:

Introspection

'I am an egotist. I feel that the
-whole universe revolves around me.
I know this isn't right, but that's
what I am and I am what I am.
But what do I really mean when I
use the term 'I'? I mean Hebrew-
the Hebrew language and literature.
This is part of my individuality-the
essence of my. life. No, this is not
quite right. What I mean to say is
that this is my whole life.
'".1 , • have nothing else outside of
this. We, that is, Hebrew and I,
have been wedded together and we
can never part. If I shall say that
I love Hebrew, that would be a false,
statement. Hebrew is my very life.
That means it is my second 'I'. How
then can I say that I .love it, just as
I cannot say I love myself. Naturally
I do. I am very much in love with
myself." .

-

Another article is , entitled "I n
Defense of Gossip:"'

"We all love gossip, and let us not
be ashamed of it. Everybody loves
it. We are all reflected in it; we,
with our lights and shadows, are
fully viewed in the mirror of gossip
and we find much enjoyment in gos-
siping about people and analyzing
their faults. That gives us a sense
of superiority. People have faults
4),nd we-well, we are perfect.
"Gossip is the foundation of our
entire belles let.tres structure, for,
what is fiction if not elaborate gos-
sip? The only difference lies in the
fact that they, the big fiction writ-
ers, write imaginary gossip while we,
in our petty life, have the pleasure
of talking about real people. Let us
therefore not be ashamed of it."

-

College Concert
Still another article 'entitled
'A. Concert Within a Concert"
deals with. the New York' City
College Stadium and its outdoor
summer Concerts: ..

"Do you see the stream of young
men and women,' teen-agers, rushing
to. the concert, watching the players
intently, almost imPatiently? Do you
know what they are waiting, for, why
they are so impatient?" - They are
waiting for the intermission. This is
* when the real concert begins, the
concert within the, concert-the real,
the'"heavenly music, the Music which
flows- from heart to heart, from
young men to young women." •

The. last essay is entitled "The
Dead Rule Us:"

"'Do you want to know where to
find the driving force of all our
movements? I'll tell you where--in
the grave. Each movement must find
some :dead idol, some great personage,
around which its activities are cen-
tered. Without- such an idol, the
movement has no chance to 'develop.
And that idol must belong ,to' yes-
terday, not to today.
"As .lgmg as he is dead, the heads
of the movements can adorn him, and
place him on a pedestal, and read'
into his word whatever they like, and
thus rule the public in his name.
Take, for instance, such men as
Lenin, Karl Marx, and others and
see what their followers have done
to them, how they usurped them, and
You will see that it is the dead who
rule us."

This is the kind Of thoughts
expressed by Persky in his book
To a Thousand Friends.
The book can be . obtained in
Detroit through the Kvutzah
Ivrith, the Hebrew Cultural
Group.
