Military Echoes
The new developments.in connection with the Korean situa-
tion may have a beneficial effect the Arab countries in their
plans with regard to Israel ... Arab leaders who still dream of a
"second round" of warfare against Israel may have to give up this
dream now that the United Nations is gradually succeeding in
forming an army of its own as= a result of the Korean conflict .. .
It is obvious that if TurkeY and other countries could contribute
thousands of men for a UN army in Korea, they can contribute
many more thousands should the UN be fOrced to maintain armed
forces of its own in sections of Palestine . . . In case of any slight
attempt on the part of the Arab rulers to start a new war against .
Israel, the UN- will this time be in a position. to send a mixed army
of .its own to check such an attempt on the spot . Different was
the case when the Arab - countries started their war against Israel
to prevent the establishment of the Jewish state . . . At that time
the UN hardly had enough people to send to Palestine as observ-
ers . . . formation of a UN army seemed a far-fetched idea ..
Now that a UN Army has been formed and the need for such an
army has been acknowledged, this army will not be dissolved even
after the Korean conflict is settled . . Should the need for such
an international armed force • arise in the Middle East, it will be
fulfilled this time without much discussion.

Domestic Affairs

Over 300 lay and professional leaders of Jewish communities
throughout the -country are serving on committees organized by
tht -Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds . These
committees direct and guide the work of the Council's major de-
partments. . . . More than 160 Jewish communities were visited
during the last six months by regional directors of the Council
of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds .. They advised the
communities and helped them meet their problems in budgeting,
campaign organization, coordination of social services and reor-
ganization of structures ... On the other hand, leaders of more
than 100 communities met during the last six monthS in 11 re-
gional and zone gatherings for intimate discussion of common
problems . . . Going beyond discussion, such meetings have led to
combined action by small and intermediate cities in meeting prob-
lems jointly Which no single community is large enough to handle

separately.

Despite complaints that jewiSh education in the United States
is being neglected, the cost of affording a JeWish educatiOn to
children has quadrupled during the last 15 years . .. Whereas in
1935 the sum of about $5,000,000 was spent by JeWish schools and
other institutions engaged in educating children, more than $20,-
000,000 will be spent this year ... Jewish Federations • and Welfare
Funds Will probably contribute about $3,000,000 this year for Jew-

Iron Curtain Jewries

.

Impregnable' iron curtains have made it impossible for us is
secure accurate news about Jews in Communist controlled coup-
tries. Talk about censorship! We have been cut off froth Russian
Jewry for many years, and only during World War II, when
several "messengers" from Russian Jewry were permitted to come
here to make capital for our Soviet ally did we have occasion to
hear vague comments about our brethren who, if the present
regime is perpetuated, may be completely lost to us. Only Polish,
Romanian, Hungarian and Czechoslovakian Jewries retain corn..
munica.tion With us—mainly through the fortunate few who are
able to leave their former homelands to settle in Israel.

-

In Poland there appears to 'be Pressure upon the remaining
Jews to sing the song of the SOviet-influenced government.. A.
statement. released by the Polish Research and Information Sery
ice in New York, in its -pamphlet "Jewish Life in Poland," provides
interesting evidence of what is -to be .expected from Polish qw...r-
ters. The statement, under the heading "A Peace Appeal by the
Chief Rabbi of Poland to World.jewry," seeks to advance the so,
called "international peace campaign." Rabbi Shalom Treistman,
who is referred to as the "venerable head of the Board of Jewish
Religious Congregations in Poland," Made the following appeal
"to orthodox - JeWs throughout the 'Wald to work for peace":

" Sakeshshalom werodfehn!! Desire peace and strive for It.?..
"It is not enough to talk about' peace; one Must seek it, work
for it, and strengthen it with all his might. We must defend
peace and fight for it. • ' ' "(

"We JeWS must remember that the enemies of peace are
also—knowingly or unknowingly—the enemiesrof the Jews. He
who prepares the cup of poison 'knows only too well that Ilhe
Jews will be the first forced 'to drink from it. The enemy of peace
does not care. Oil is more dear to him than human blood; espe-
cially if it is the blood of a Jew.
"For this reason it makes no sense for us to chatter about
`neutrality' in the heroic strUggle taking place throughout the
world in defense of peace: For this reason we cannot sit back
quietly and look with indifference upon the political blocs being
built for war. •
"No ! Under no condition must we allow ourselves to be hum-
bugged by the gibberish of the' warmongers that they are doing
everything for the well-being of the people.
"The world needS peace' , : it needs absolute calm and no war
of nerves and no cold war.
"Jewry especially wants. peace.. It is quite obvious that or
the Jews _ the question -of 'war or peace' is a question of 'life -or -
death.'

"The climate 'of peace is for us what sunshine. Is for flowers.,

water for fish and air for every living thing. Henceforth, to the
toast `Lechaim' (to your health), a Jew answers 'Lechaim 11.1

be no health, no life.
"I appeal' to you everywhere as a representative of Jewish
religious congregations in a country where millions of our brothel*
were wiped out by the Hitlerite beast. Do not sit quietly and

peace front with .all his heart and soul in this - holy struggle for
peace throughout the world!"
Read the statement carefully and you'll detect 'in it not se
much an appeal for peace as an attack upon our government -
and the United Nations, an attempt to brand as "humbug" and
"gibberish of the warmongere'the determination of the nations

ing behind the Iron Curtain is in itself proof of a tongu
attitude hidden in the saintly appeals for peace, addressed t

The Chief Rabbi of the British Isles, Israel Brodie, had a
different story to tell last week when he appealed to the Jewries
