THE JEWISH NEWS-15 Friday, July 21, 1950 Sweden, Denmark Extend De Jure Status to Israel TEL AVIV, (JTA)-The Gov- . ernments of Sweden and Den- mark have extended de jure recognition to the state of Is- rael. The two Scandinavian states apparently .refrained from recognizing the Jewish . state until Sweden had obtained a satisfactory statement from Israel on the Bernadotte case. The Israel Cabinet empow- ered the Ministers of. Finance, Health and Labor to negotiate . with representatives of 2,000 nurses who ended their five-day strike after a promise by the Histadrut executive that it would press for their demands for higher pay, longer vacations and a shorter work week. The • Cabinet also discussed the situation of the Arabs living within Israel. It approved an 8,500,000 - pound ($23,800,000) project involving the use of waste water for irrigation pur- poses in the Negev. The Foreign Ministry issued a statement asserting that "cer- tain newspapers published dis- torted versions" of a speech which Foreign Minister Moshe Sharett delivered before the stu- dents of the Hebrew University. The statement quoted Sharett as saying that while "Israel is most anxious to promote friend- ly relations with all nations re- gardless of their internal re- gime," it is "impossible to ig- nore the fact that it is only in the democratic countries that the Jewish communities enjoy freedom of organization, ex- pression and independent ac- tivity." Jerusalem Has Test Air Alert JERUSALEM, (JTA) - An air alert was sounded here July 13 by the Israel military authori- ties without a subsequent pub- lic explanation. All traffic was halted during the alert. Police officials told the Jew- ish Telegraphic Agency that the alarm was merely a test. It had been announced earlier that a number of such tests will be made within the next fortnight. The population took the alert calmly. In Haifa flags were displayed in greeting to 321 American merchant marine cadets who _ arrived on the training ship Empire State to spend a week in Israel. The city is giving a re- _ ception for the cadets, about 15 percent of whom are Jewish. The summer session f o r American studentS at the Berl Katznelson Institute at Kfar Saba was inaugurated at cere- monies attended by leading Is- rael educators, writers, labor leaders and statesmen. Among the speakers, who told of Is- rael's great need for scientific workers, were Labor Minister Golda, Myerson' and Acting. President Joseph Sprinzak. TEL AVIV, (WJA)-Some 400 Arab teachers in Israel Govern- ment schools are being organ- ized in a special group which is to be affiliated with the General Israeli Teachers Organization. Infamous Bergen-Belsen Camp Finally Closed BELSEN, Germany-(JTA) -The Bergen - Belsen camp here was closed last week and turned over to the Bri- tish Army. During the N a z regime some 30,000 Jews were mur- dered at the infamous con- centration camp. After the war, the British used the camp for displaced J e w s. Later, the International Re- fugee Organization took over its administration. It was es- timated that some 100,000 Jews were processed at the Belsen camp prior to emi- gration between 1945 and the present. LONDON - (JTA) - The prediction that if the Korean war is not localized the Middle East may also become an area of conflict was made by S. Lev- enberg, speaking on behalf of the Jewish Agency at an annual conference of Bachad, an or- ganization of religious chalut- zim. The conference adopted reso- lutions pledging to send man- power to Israel and calling for the strengthening of the World Zionist Organization. It reiter- ated its demand that a world conference of religious Zionist laborites should be convoked to consider major issues affecting the interests of religious labor- ites in Israel. Ultiniatum Forces Arabs Illegally in Israel to Return to Transjordan JERUSALEM, (JTA)-A group of Arabs occupying two Jewish houses in Israel territory were removed by the Arab Legion to Palestine territory held by Transjordan following an ulti- matum of the Israel authorities. The - transfer was carried out Without incident in the presence of United Nations observers. - The Arabs occupied the Jew- ish houses several weeks ago. Israel authorities complained to the mixed armistice commis- sion, and obtained a ruling from that body that the .Arabs had moved into the Jewish houses unlawfully.
