JUST RETURNED from a little
trip to the Catskill Mountains ...
and a few days in - New York
City . . . Our host in the Cat-
skills was your old friend, Mic-
key Woolf, community band
.master whose Bel-Aire Country
Club is a popular resort for
eastern vacationers . . . Detroit-
er Ann Frankenstein provided
us with the opportunity of hit-
ting the big city . . . since she
was driving. there from Mickey's
place to visit her daughter,
Ruth . . . Ruth is a model in
the big town . .. with dramatic
ambitions for which she is at-
tending one of the finest schools
available.

BACK IN DETROIT, we learn
that out at Tarn O'Shanter Coun-
try Club they're now calling
Lester Satovsky by the nickname
of "Ace" . . . after seeing his
most recent accomplishment .. .
Last week, we mentioned about
him almost shooting his second
hole-in-one . . . Les evidently
didn't like the idea of only corn-
ing close. .. He scored his second
ace on the 11th hole . . . which
is also where he shot his first
. . . Doing that, folks, is about as
long a long-shot as they come!

ATTENTION ALL YOU talent-
ed lassies who want to sing with
a band . . Here's the chance
for an audition you've been
waiting for . . . Ben Katzman,
local orchestra leader, is looking
for a. singer . . . so if you're over
17, call him at TO. 8-2907 . . .
and arrange for that audition.

CREDIT ANOTHER "FIRST"
to the National Life Insurance
Company of Vermont . . . thanks
to Rena T. Kanter and son
Austin . . . who becane the only
mother and son combination to
each sell a quarter-million dol-
lars worth of life insurance in
one year.

WHILE PLAYING GOLF, last
week, insurance man, Sam
Weiss, lost his ball . . . He was
about to give up looking for it
when a sweet-looking old lady
who had been watching his"
search, approached and said, "I
don't want to interfere, but
would it be cheating if I told
you where the ball was?"
* * *
CONGRATULATIONS TO. . .
Sam and Sally Klein . . . who
will celebrate the silver wed-
ding anniversary on July 24 .. .
Although the Bel-Aire caterers
look and act more like newly-
weds than they do a couple that
have been hitched for 25 years
.. . Best wishes for many more
years of happy married life for
Sam and Sally.

ONE OF OUR town's unsung

heroes was honored, last Sun-
day night, at a testimonial
dinner at Max Elkin's Colon-
ial Hotel in Mt. Clemens . . .
Joe Jones, a leader in the Jew-
ish War Veterans, and one of
the top officers of the local
American Legion, was the re-
cipient of several well-deserved
kudos at an affair sponsored
by the Lawrence Jones Post of
JWV .. . named, by the way,
in memory of Joe's brother .. .
As a youngster in one of the
lands now behind the dark
curtain, Joe learned something
about -tyranny at first hand ...
seeing members of his family
killed . . . Since his arrival in
the United States, he has
never ceased appreciating . „
and being thankful for .
liberties guaranteed by a dem-
ocracy . . . He fought with the
U.S. Army during World War I
and has given about every
spare minute since to patri-
otic causes . . . Joe's extensive
help to former GI's of every
creed is carried on quietly . .
When questioned about it, he
says, "I charge it to my Amer-
icanism account" . which
is his personal way of saying
thank you to Uncle Sam.

News Brevities

Feature Mrs. Goldberg

DISA 'N DATA .. . No matter
which way he turns at home,
Walter Klein, popular assistant
director of Jewish Community
Council, is confronted with
namesakes from some portion of
the Bible .. . Mrs. Klien's name
is Esther . . . Their three daugh-
ters are Miriam, Hannah and
Naomi . . . Dr. Lou Woll recently
took Faye Cohen to see the De-
troit Tigers play . . and when
the opposing team began scor-
ing too many runs, Manager
"Red" Rolfe decided it was time
to change hurlers . As the
Tiger pitcher began walking off
the mound, Faye exclaimed,
"Gosh, isn't it embarassing for
him in front of all these people?"
. . . Say, folks, if you're looking
for someplace to spend these
hot Sundays . . . try Pontiac
Beach . . . It's new, sandy and
kept immaculately clean . .
Drive out Couzens Highway to
Telegraph Rd., right on Tele-
graph all the way to M-59, left
onto M-59, then watch for di-
rections to Pontiac State Park.

CARE Offers Special
Israel Holiday Parcel;
Reuther Urges Support

Orders are being accepted im-
mediately for a new special
holiday package to bring extra
food to Israel in time for the
Jewish New Year, the Detroit
CARE Committee announced.
The new parcel, available at
$12.95, will contain 15 1.2 pounds
of foods scarce in austerity-ra-
tioned Israel, including a .whole
canned chicken. Ethel Polk, lo-
cal CARE executive, indicated
that all orders received by mid-
August will be delivered in time
for Rosh Hashanah, Sept. 12
and 13.
Like all CARE's other pack-
ages for Israel, contents of the
holiday package are kosher and
have been approved by the
Union of Orthodox Jewish Con-
gregations of America.
Addressing his appeal pri-
marily to non-Jewish persons,
Victor G. Reuther, UAW educa-
tion director and a recent visi-
tor to Israel, urged increased
support of the CARE program in
the Jewish state.
"This should be an appropri-
ate moment to suggest to non-
Jewish people in our community
that they give moral . support to
the people of Israel. It might
serve to remind us that our own
independence which we cele-
brated July 4, has been strength-
ed by the work and courage of
immigrants whose offsprings
are now our solid citizenry.

The 125 Red Feather services
of the Community Chest gave
354,661 units of service in family
welfare, health and recreation
during 1949, figures released by
the Council of Social Agencies
Researh Department show.

Aleichem Institute, and has re-
