'Worlds in Collision'

Dr. Immanuel Velikovsky's Great
Work Stirs Universal Controversy

"Worlds in Collision" by Dr.
Immanuel Velikovsky, is a most
remarkable book. Since its re-
cent publication by Macmillan.
it has been subjected to contro-
versy of a mi -st exciting nature.
It has been condemned and ad-
mired, challenged and praised.
But even those who attacked it
admired its uniqueness, the
scholarship of its author, the
genius that is reflected in its
compilation.
Even if the author's views are
fantastic, his kook commands
attention for the scholarly ap-
proach it makes in the study of
the universe and the relation of
the author's "findings" to his-
tory. It retains an important
place among "best sellers."
Dr. Velikovsky began to work
on something entirely different,
on a book "Ages in Chaos" which
is to follow "Worlds in Col-
lision - which resulted from his
unique search for revelations in
the activities of the planets.
His conclusions are that in
1500 B. C. Venus bumped the
earth and t hat this planet
stopped rotating on its axis
for a time. He maintains that
many of the Biblical stories
are explainable by the data he
produces. He goes so far as to
assert that the length of the
year had changed as a result
of the bumps that occurred.
He maintains: "We recognized.
that the religions of the peoples
of the world have a common as-
tral origin. The narrative of the
Hebrew Bible concerning the
plagues and other wonders of
the time of the Exodus is his-
torically true and the prodigies
recorded have a natural expla-
nation. We learned that there
was a world conflagration and
that naphtha poured from the
sky; that only a small propor-
tion of people and animals sur-
vived; that the passage of the
Sea and the theophany at Mount
Sinai are not inventions . . ."
Also: "We found that josh-
ua's miracle with the sun and
the moon is not a tale for the
credulous. We came to under-
stand the real meanings of the
messages of the Hebrew pro-
phets Amos, Isaiah, Joel, Mi-
cah . . ."
Thus, throughout his work, Dr.
Velikovsky holds his reader en-
tranced with his remarkable
conclusions. Scientists are con-
demning him, but some give cre-
dence to his work.
Time will tell whether Dr.
Velikovky's findings will revolu-
tionize thinking and the views of
the world on past events. Mean-
while, his work, from a literary
point of view, stands out as a
great creation, and from the
scientific approach is challeng-
ing and enchanting.
Immanuel Velikovsky was born
so in Vitebsk, Russia, in 18957 In
1901 his family moved to Mos-
cow where he was graduated
from the Gymnasium in 1913, re-
cipient of a gold medal, and
with knowledge of Hebrew, Ger-
man, Russian, French, English
and Latin. During 1912 to 1914
he traveled around the Eastern
Mediterranean and for a few
months tried pioneering in Pal-
estine. In 1913 he printed a small
book of verse. For a term in 1914
he studied at the University of
Edinburgh where he had an op-
portunity to listen to Henri
Bergson and in the following
years studied economy, law, and
history in Moscow. Attracted es-
pecially to history, at the age of
20, Dr. Velikovsky says he "at-
tempted a commentary on the
"Book of Exodus." He studied
Medicine in the Moscow Imper-
ial. University. In 1917 he pub-

ous fervor and Zionist zeal."
From 1918 to 1921, the years of
the revolution, Dr. VelikoVsky
spent much time in the Ukraine
and the Caucasus, put in a year
of study in Charkow University
and received his degree
from the University of Moscow,
1921. He then went to Berlin
and took various courses in
medicine at Charite and Kaiser
Wilhelm Academie.
In 1923 Dr. Velikovsky married
the violinist, Elisabeth Kramer,
daughter of the Hebrew publish-
er George Kramer, in Hamburg.
The same year they went to Pal-
estine where he practiced as a
'physician. A series of papers was
published by Dr. Velikovsky from
time to time on the problem of
the subconscious, in various
languages.
Dr. Velikovsky is a citizen of
Israel. His daughter fought for
Israel's defense.
