Chicago Tribune Apologizes
For 'Secret Government'

CHICAGO, (JTA1—The Chi-
cago Tribune apologized to Jew-
ish organizations for a front-
page article asserting that Su-
preme Coiirt Justice Felix Frank-
furter, Henry AtIorgenthau, Jr.,
and. Sen, Herbert, H. Lehman
constituted a "secret government
of the United States." The ar-
ticle appeared May 29 -under a
Washington dateline. (The Jew-
ish News condemned it editor-
ially on June 9).
The apology was made in the
form of a letter addressed by
J. Loy Maloney, managing ed-
itor of the paper, to the Chicago
chapters of the American Jew-
ish Committee, American Jew-
ish Congres s, Jewish Labor
Committee and An ti-Defama Lion
League of Bnai Brith. However.
the letter was not published in
the Chicago Tribune.
Declaring that the article to
which the Jewish organizations
took exception "was an isolated
news report and not the start of
a series," Mr. Maloney's letter
says that the Washington cor-
respondent dealt with Justice
Frankfurter, Mr. Morgenthau
and Sen. Lehman as public men,
regardless of their religious be-
liefs. "The story was not meant
to imply any association or par-
allelism between Zionism and
Communism," the editor said.
"The Tribune is not anti-Sec
mitic," . Mr. Maloney continued.
"Its' record has been that of a
defender of minorities when
they were right, however un-
popular their cause." Emphasiz-
ing that in printing the article,
the Tribune "did not foresee the
interpretations which have been
put upon it in Jewish, circles." the
letter concludes by saying that
"these implications were not in-
tended by the Tribune, which
has no desire to create ill-feel-
ing or to furnish ammunition to

anti-Semites."

ation of exclusively Jewish
names, in linking of Zionism and
Communism and lurid references
to suicides and mysterious
deaths vaguely associated with
the individuals named in the
article, the writer had followed
the pattern of Goebbels and
professional anti-Semites in the
United States."
The four .. ational Jewish
agencies then sent a letter to J.
Loy Maloney, managing editor
of the Tribune, stating that the
article "can be and has been in-
terpreted as employing anti-
Semitism for political purposes."
Mnphasizing that they do not
question the right of any news-
paper to express its political
philosophy and do not seek to
circumscribe the Tribune's right
to criticize individuals in public
life regardless of their race,
color or creed, the JeWish or-
ganizations said;

'"The Concern of the Jewish community
in this instance sterns from the fact that
the article appears to follow the recog-
nized Fopagancla pattern originated by
the diaoolical genius of Goebbels of Nazi
Germany and emulated by the leading anti-
Semites in this country. The technique
of associating exclusively. Jewish names
