Ordered by his doctor to cur-
tail his activities, Leon Kay
found it necessary to withdraw
from the presidency of the
Zionist Organization of Detroit
several hours before his name
was to be presented for re-elec-
tion at the annual meeting on
June. 15.
Harry Cohen, chairman of the
nominating committee, proposed
that the other officers should
be elected and selection of Mr.
Kay's successor was deferred
for action by the newly-elected
board of directors.
Albert Elazar, Dr. Louis L.
Kazdan and Rabbi Jacob E. Se-
gal were re-elected vice-presi-
dents; A. C. Lappin, secretary,
and David M. Zellman, treas-
urer. The following are newly
elected members of the board:
Bertha Chomsky, Samuel Feld-
stein, Bill Fitzerman, Ira G.
Kaufman, Herman Kazdan, Dr.
Sam Krohn, Aaron Kurland,
Louis Lightstone, Milton S. Mar-
wil, Dr. Albert A. Schwartz and
Morris Selborn.
The following were re-elected
members of the board for an-
other year.

ZOA Convention Plans
NEW YORK, (JTA)—A report

on his recent call on President
Truman at the White House was
presented by Benjamin G.
Browdy, president of the Zion-
ist Organization of America, at
an all-day session of the ZOA
national executive committee.
David Moskowitz, chairman of
the ZOA convention program
committee, reported that 2,000
delegates from every state in the
union will attend the 53rd an-
nual convention . of the' ZOA,
scheduled to open in Chicago
on June 30.
Speakers at the convention,
which will deal with the Ameri-
can Zionist scene and the world
scene encompassing the issues
confronting the forthcoming
World Zionist Congress, will in-
clude Dr. Abba Hillel Silver,
Louis Lipsky, Benjamin G.
Browdy, Dr. Emanuel Neumann,
Dr. Nahum Goldmann, Rabbi
Irving Miller, Judge Louis • E.
Levinthal and Dr. Max Nuss-
baum.
U. S. Vice-President Barkley
will be the principal speaker at
a session devoted to the JNF
and Funds for Israel.

America Gets One-Third of
400 Delegates to Congress

JERUSALEM, (J T A) — Ap-
proximately one-third of the 400
delegates to the World Zionist
Congress which is scheduled to
open here in December will be
elected in the United States, it
was; announced by. the Jewish
Agency.

A new constitution, prepared
by a committee headed by Mr.
Lappin, was adopted at the an-
nual meeting.
Kay Reports on Israel
In his report on his second
trip to Israel, Mr. Kay told of
the difficulties encountered by
the infant state because of lack
of necessary 'funds and urged
that all efforts be made by
American Jews to provide Isra-
el with hard currency—through
contributions to the UJA and
through private investments.
Mr. Kay, who presided at the
annual meeting, declared that
there remains a great need for
the Zionist organizations which
must remain in the vanguard in
whatever efforts may arise to
explain the United States posi-
tion to Israel and Israel to the
people of this country.

American Youths In Israel

TEL AVIV, (JTA)—A group of
14 American young men and
women trained as Chalutzim in
the United States arrived here.
They will complete their train-
ing at an agricultural colony in
Israel prior to establishing their
own collective settlement.
Dr. Peretz Bernstein, leader of
the General Zionists in Israel,
is leaving for the United States
to participate in the convention
of the Zionist Organization of
America in Chicago at the end
of this month.

JUDGE LOUIS E. LEVINTHAL,
president of the Jewish publica-
tion Society of America, has an-
nounced that effective June 15,
the society has leased its type-
setting facilities to Maurice Jac-
obs, Inc. The new firm, headed
by Dr. Maurice Jacobs, who was
executive vice-president of the
society until his resignation on
March 15, will assume the con-
tracts of the press division.

LATE HOLMAN SHAPIRO

Israel, through the Jewish Na-
tional Fund, marking the be-
ginning of the Kolman Shapiro
Memorial Grove.
It was planned to plant a
grove of at least 1,000 trees in
Mr. Shapiro's memory in one
of the Israel forests.
Mr. Shapiro, whose late resi-
dence was at 18625 Wildemere,
died May 31. He was well known
in the wholesale meat packing
industry and as head of K.
Shapiro Veal and Lamb, Inc. He
was a generous supporter of
many causes through the phil-
anthropic trust fund—the K.
Shapiro Foundation — which he
founded several years ago.
His survivors are his wife,
Sylvia; a daughter, Mrs. Henry
Siegl; three sons, Seymour,
Avery and Melvin; two sisters,
two brothers and several grand-
children.
