A statement embodying the
views of the Jewish Community
Council of Detroit, regarding
Federal Aid to education has
been transmitted to members of
t h e Michigan Congressional
Delegation.
Submitted in behalf of the
Council and its 266 affiliates, the
letter reaffirms the Council's
adherence to the American prin-
ciple of separation of Church
and State, and supports the
public school system open to all
children, irrespective of church
affiliation, or color.
Citing the strengthening of
the public school system as a
strengthening of the democratic
foundations of American life,
the letter continues: "The right
of a group to maintain and
conduct schools for the perpet-
uation of an instruction in its
doctrines for those who volun-
tarily enroll within them is
guaranteed by American tradi-
tion and law. Such groups may
therefore . . . organize and de-
velop private schools. The pub-
lic schools, however, being the
only schools that belong to and
serve all the people, alone have
the right to public funds con-
tributed by all the people. Any
proposal which permits support
in any form out of public funds
to be extended to other than
public schools_ runs counter to
the basic American principles
stated above."

Plans to Aid DPs
Under New Law

NEW YORK—Passage of the
amended DP Act of 1948, mak-
ing persons who came to Ger-
many, Austria, and Italy prior
to Jam• 1, 1949, eligible for im-
migration to the United States,
prompted officials of HIAS, the
Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society,
425 Lafayette St., New York 3,
N. Y., to urge all persons in this
country who intend to execute
housing and job assurances for
DPs to do so at once.
Isaac L. Asofsk-y-, HIAS execu-
tive director, said that sponsors
of DPs should file affidavits im-
mediately. This can be done at
the HIAS offices.
The Act also changes the eli-
gibility of persons temporarily
in the U. S., who cannot return
to their native land because of
fear of persecution, from April
1, 1948 to April 30, 1949. This
new legislation is limited to
15,000 such persons. HIAS of-
fices here and in other princi-
pal cities of the U. S. will assist
in the preparation of applica-
tions to adjust the status of
those in this category and will
represent applicants at hearings
before the Immigration and
Naturalization Service.
Plans are underway for the
settlement of at least 35,000
Jewish displaced persons who
will come to the United States
during the fifteen-month period
beginning July 1 under the new
DP Act, according to Arthur
Greenleigh, executive director
of the United Service for New
Americans.
USNA has announced that the
108 Shanghai refugees on Ellis
Island awaiting a decision on
their eventual resettlement in
the United States were granted
a stay until June 19.
Meanwhile, conferences are
continuing in Washington be-
tween immigration authorities,
USNA and other Jewish agen-
cies on the status of the refu-
gees who are expected to be ad-
mitted as immigrants as soon
as President Truman signs the
new DP bill,

Barkley Lauds JNF
Truman Village Project

BOSTON, Mass.—Hailing the
establishment of Harry S. Tru-
man Village in Israel by the
Jewish National Fund, Vice-
President Alben W. Barkley ex-
pressed hope that the agricul-
tural colony bearing the Presi-
dent's name will "serve not only
as a testimonial-- to President
Truman's efforts in behalf of
the Jewish State, but also as a
firm link binding the oldest de-
mocracy in the New World with
the youngest to be born after
the World War, in a firm union
against all aggression."
Barkley spoke at a banquet
arranged by the New England
JNF at the Statler Hotel in
which the Truman Village Proj-
ect was launched. 1500 people
filled the ballroom to capacity.
Fred Monosson, New England
JNF chairman, announced that
$100,000 towards a national goal
of $500,000 'has been subscribed
by New England Jewry for the
project.
The meeting heard a message
from President Truman ad-
dressed to Dr. Harris J. Levine,
president of the JNF, in which—
referring to the proposal to have
a village in Israel named for
him—Mr. Truman declared that
he was "highly honored" and
appreciated very much what the
Jewish National Fund is propos-
ing to do.
Mendel N. Fisher, executive
director of the JNF of America,
announced that the Fund in
Jerusalem allocated 3,000 dun-
ams for the Truman Village and
that, the goal for the project is
$500,000 which will be raised
from popular subscriptions. Jew-
ish communities and children
throughout the nation will make
pcpular gifts through the tradi-
tional fund-raising program of
the JNF, he added.
