Drummers of Decay

Seven Arts Feature Syndicate, Inc.)

The truth of the adage "God save us from our friends, we
can take care of our enemies," has never been better illustrated
than by what is happening in American Jewish life. Our "friends"
seem to be working overtime to wreck whatever has been built
in recent years.
It is sickening how the elements who purported to be saviours
of Jewish life go on digging its grave. What motive other than
evil prophesy is there in the current rumors about the UJA? We
have not always agreed with its leadership, but we never chal-
lenged its honesty. Those who circulate evil rumors . about the
UJA cannot possibly be motivated by constructive considerations.
And the "friends" of American Jewry are busy on other fronts
too. They are such sickening lovers of decay that they predict
the demise of almost all manifestations of Jewish life. I don't
pretend to know the future of the - Zionist organizations in Ameri-
ca. But it is beyond understanding why certain elements derive
pleasure from condemning to death a movement that still has
such strong hold on the Jewish masses, of America. I have heard
it said that the American Jewish Committee was gradually liq-
uidating its program in preparation for the day when there will
be but one central Jewish organization. What evil purpose is there
beyond that falsehood? In recent weeks evil word reached me
about the UPA, the JDC and the American section of the Jewish
Agency. Particularly vicious 4- umors have been circulating, about
the JTA. Who is the father of those vicious rumors and why?
Jewish life in our country is being menaced by a form of
propaganda which strikes at our very roots. Spread rumors of
decay and rottenness and insincerity and you will only serve to
alienate the mass of people from all, Jewish interests. Unless one
has a constructive program capable of replacing the structure
that is Jewish life in America today he has no right to shout
"sin."

Take It or Leave It

Cardinal Spellman is said to have suggested Vatican aban
donment of strict Jerusalem policy. He is convinced the inter-
nationalization proposal cannot be implemented and he would
rather have a modicum of world control than no control at all.
The Pope is adamant to the counsellors of moderation. But there
are indications that at least two Catholic countries within the
Trusteeship Council are cold to the idea of going along with
the Vatican position.

We Were Right About Zolli

A paper using this column was, taken to task by certain quar-
ters when it carried a story we had about the ugly role the former
Chief Rabbi of Rome has been playing since he was converted to
Catholicism. Conversion to a new faith it seems has not changed
the personality of Zolli: Proof that our information about Zolli
was correct was supplied recently by a Spanish Bishop who, in a
most vicious anti-Jewish statement, quoted Zolli as authority for
the charge it was Zionism's aim to establish a throne in Palestine
whence "it can inspire and direct world Judaism with a view to
establishment of a universal kingdom in whieh it will be Israel
that directs and gives the orders." A meshumed remains a meshu-
med.
