Support for Local
Hospital Fund
More than half a million dol-
lars has been raised in the gen-
eral campaign of the Greater
Detroit Hospital Fund in one
week since the kick-off dinner.
Th..: results' of activities, as an-
nounced at Hospital Fund re-
port luncheons last Tuesday and
Friday, show contributions for
this period of $527,194, bring-
ing the total subscribed to. the
Hospital Fund to $15,709,680.
The new Jewish Hospital is
one of 14 projects in the $19,-
720,000 construction pr o g r a m
and will receive $2,500,000 from
the Hospital Fund when the ob-
jective is reached. •
In a statement concerning
the present activities of the
Fund, Max Osnos, president of
the Jewish Hospital Association
said: "During the present cam-
paign of the Greater Detroit
Hospital Fund, it is essential
that the Jews of Detroit do
their full share to make the
program a success irr order to
speed construction of Jewish
Hospital and help correct the
shocking hospital problems that
now exist. • -
"In an independent' campaign
conducted some time ago, the
Jewish Hospital Association
raised $2,500,000 which was not
enough to build the type of
hospital that the JeWish com-
munity could be proud to spon-
sor. With the success of • the
Hospital Fund, the Jewish Hos-
pital Association will receive an
additional $2,500,000 which • will
mean that we can then build
a modern $5,000,000 medical
center. . -
"By accepting inclusion in the
Greater Detroit Hospital Fund,
the Jewish- Hospital Association
'agreed not to conduct further
ftind raising campaigns for a
period of at least five years.
This means that the Hospital
Fund campaign now going on
is our last opportunity for years
to come to ensure the construc-
tion - of the large and well-
equipped Jewish Hospital we
have all hoped and worked for.
We must not miss this. oppor-
tunity. We must do our share
and we must do it nOw!"
Israel Acts to Block
Cash 'Black Market'
NEW YORK, (JTA)—The Is-
rael Government will take all
possible measures to stop "black
market transfers" of .foreign
currency to Israel, Gi d e o n
Strauss, Consul for Economic
Affairs in New York, announced.
"Some individuals and organ-
izations have been transferring
money at illegal rates, a prac-
tice which injured Israel's econ-
-- omy by depreciating its cur-
rency," Mr. Strauss said. "Natu-
rally, it also injures the great
majority of persons inside and
outside the State who transact
their businesses lawfully." He
denied rumors that there is
more than one legal rate of
exchange for foreign. currency,
including dollars. All transfers
and investments are approved
'only at the official rate for the
Israel pound—$2.80.
To enforce its foreign currency
regulations, the Israel govern-
