Pre-Campaign Workers Raise More
Than $2 Million; Many Prospects Left
Responsible for the • lion's
share of Detroit's Allied Jewish
Campaign giving, the Pre-Cam-
'paign division has secured $2,-
225,000 in pledges from 520 con-
tributors to date, Louis Berry,
chairman of the Pre-Campaign
Cabinet, announced.
The division raised $3,746,000
from 1,111 contributors in, last
year's drive.
"Detroit's top giNrs, whom We
are seeing daily, feel keenly
their kinship with the Jews who
are seeking homes and building
a new life in Israel," Berry. de-
clared. "They know they must
set the example of generous giv-
ing for our community."
Pre - Campaign contributions
to date show an increase over
pledges by the same givers last
year, Berry pointed out. "If
Pre-Campaign gifts continue at
this rate," he declared, "the Al-
lied Jewish Campaign will raise
enough to discharge its obliga-
tions overseas and to carry on
our essential national and local
services."

A report by Dr. Simon,Feder-
bush, member of the World
Jewish Congress executive,
shows that there is a function-
ing Jewish community in Spain
which ,teadfastly maintains its
religious traditions. ,
Dr. Federbush announced that
at the request of Jewish groups
in Spain, the World Jewish Con-
gress had dispatched Torah
scrolls, prayer books and other
religious articles for the use of
Jewish congregations in that
country which had lacked such
articles.
The main body of 2,000 Span-
ish Jews resides in Barcelona.
There is a scattering of 3100 to
400 Jews in a few other cities.
Of Barcelona's Jewish popula-
tion, .400 are refugees supported
by the JDC.
About 60 per cent of Barce-
lona's Jews are Sephardim, orig-
inating from Spain, North Af-
rica, Greece and Turkey. The
other 40 per cent are Ashken-
nazim, stemming from Central
and Eastern Europe. The entire
community is joined in a United
Congregation and uses a rented
hall as a synagogue.
The WIZO has an active group
in Barcelona and the congrega-
tion is now organizing a He-
brew school. Senor Davido Ro-
mano, professor of, HebreW at
the University of Barcelona, has
been giving Hebrew courses to
the congregation.
