Israel's Arabs
Proclaim Loyalty

TEL AVIV, (JTA) - Israel
Army Chief of Staff Yigal Yadin
met with Bedouin. chieftains in
the vicinity of Beersheba and
was given the traditional cere-
monial welcome accorded a mili-
tary leader.
While the Arab leaders greet-
ed the Israel commander, their
mounted troops fired volleys in-
to the air and carried out a
number of cavalry maneuvers.
Sheikh Suleiman Hazail, repre-
senting all the chiefs, presented
Brig. Yadin with an engraved
silver sword.
The Sheikh asked that Israel
arm loyal Bedouin tribes so that
they would be able to protect
themselves against the contin-
uous raids of bandits from
Transjordan territory. The Arab
asked for agricultural equipment
and higher wages for Bedouins
employed on government proj-
ects. The Israel commander re-
plied that most of the requests
would be filled shortly, adding
that Israel "knew her friends
and made her foes realize with-
nuch delay the effects of
unfriendly acts."
Arabs living in the area ad-
jacent to the Arab tria, ngle area
celebrated the first anniversary
of their transfer to Israel juris-
diction. Notables from numerous
villages gathered at Tira and
paraded in hohor of the event.
Arab horsemen presented color-
ful examples of horsemanship.
Addressing the gathering in
Hebrew, Adul Rauf Razik, lead-
er of the village of Tabiyah,de-
.clared that the Arabs welcomed
the termination of the Mandate.
He also lauded the Israel gov-
ernment for "not discriminating
between Jews and Arabs." A
sword was later presented to the
Israel military governor for the
area, Lt. Col. Goel Levitzki.

CIO Official. Denies
Being Anti-Semitic

DENVER, (JTA)-A statement
denying the charge of anti-Se-
mitism levelled agaist him by
the American Jewish Labor
Council was issued by James B.
Carey, national secretary-treas-
urer of the Congress of Indus-
trial Organizations. The labor
leader made the statement to
Robert S. Gamzey, editor of In-
termountain Jewish News, Den-
ver.
Declaring that the American
Jewish Labor Council "is nothing
but a Communist Party front,"
Mr. Carey termed the charge
sheer nonsense. "My record in
combatting racial and religious
discrimination ever since I be-
came old enough to think speaks
for itself," Carey declared. "So,
too, does the record of the C.I.O.
and its affiliates."
