You can well imagine when I
drOve up to Fanny Brice's Bev-
erly Hills home that I would be
greeted at the door by "Baby
Snooks" . . . "Baby" was smartly
dressed in a gray cotton patio
dress. When I complimented the
NBC star on how lovely she
looked, Miss Brice answered,
"You know this dress reminds
me of what most people's potato
pancakes looke like . . . grey..."
"Aren't yours?" I asked.
"No, I lave a special trick,"
she answered. Quick as I could,
out came my pencil and pad.
As I watched, Fanny put on
an apron and reached for the
meat grinder. "This is the secret
of my grey-less pancakes," she
said:
First, Fanny ground the po-
tatoes and onions together,
using the finest blade of the
meat grinder. She put a bowl on
the floor under the grinder to
catch the drippings of the po-
tato and onion. After the grind-
ing was finished, she picked up
the bowl and showed me that
the residue in the bottom of
the bowl was starch . . . which
she discarded but she did use
the liquid from the onion.
In another bOwl she separated
the yolks and whites of the eggs
and beat the whites until they
stood in peaks. Doing this, pan-
cakes were bound to come out
light and fluffy. She put each
pancake separately on a plate,
explaining if she would pile one
-on top of another they would
become soggy, while if air cir-
culates around the pancakes,
they would remain crisp.

Recipe for Potato Pancake
4 medium potatoes
cup 'flour
1 egg, separated
1 teaspoon salt.
Pepper
1 tablespoon onion (ground)

HUMAN
SIDE

of the

United Jewish Appeal

With Mayor Albert D. Cash
of Cincinnati as one of the auc-
tioneers, 200 cases of oranges
from Israel . produced a net
profit of almost $6,000 for the
United Jewish Appeal.
Auctioned under the direction
of the Cincinnati Jewish Wel-
fare Fund, which raises money
in that city for the UJA, some
of the oranges were sold for as
much as $500 a case. Total pro-
ceeds were $7,128, ,representing
$5,700 more than the market
value of the merchandise.

The loss and recovery of $1745
\ _
in Brooklyn this week netted
the United Jewish Appeal a gift
of $100.
Mrs. Sadie Alter shook a sheet
out of her bedroom window, and
in process "shook out the sum
of money 'which her husband
had. placed in the bed for safe-
keeping. Three 10-year-old girls,
who live in the same apartment
house, found the money and
turned it over to the police, who
identified it as Mrs. Alter's.
Thankful for the recovery of
her .lost funds, Mrs. Alter gave
each of the girls $50,. and .con-
tributed $100 to the United
Jewish Appeal.
