A FAVORITE STORY in the
community had its origin, years
back; in the offices of former
Federal Judge Henry Butzel . .
Judge Butzel, after explaining at
some length the history of Old
Glory to a group of aliens seek-
ing citizenship papers, asked
one of the applicants ; "And
now, tell me, What, flies over the
city hall?" The alien blinked
a moment and- then- trium-
phantly rePlied, "Peejins!" -

all brand new furniture for the
place . . . But what happened
to all the big talk about a Bnai
Brith Youth Center? .

FOURTH ANNUAL show by
Congregation Bnai Israel of Pon-
tiac, Mich., will. be held . .
June 3 and 4 . . . in the syna-
gogue's auditorium ... with title
to be "Do You Remember?" .. .
Morley raised by these shows goes
to help complete the beautiful
new conservative congregation.
They were originally run with a
cast of only six people and a
piano player . . . Today, the cast
of 40 and a full orchestra takes
part in what is the outstanding
affair of the year in the Pon-
tiac Jewish community . . . and
is eagerly awaited by everyone.

HATTI ALPERT, a nurse for
many years, was administering
first-aid, last weeek, to a lad
who fell while riding his bicycle
down Linwood ... A small crowd
gathered round and, as Hattie
worked to stop the flow of blood,
a lad only a couple of years
older than the victim pushed his
way through . . "I'm a • Boy
Scout," he said to Hattie. "You
go along, lady, and I'll take
over."

39 LAUNDRY DRIVERS . . .
out of 40 invited . . . attended
Allied Jewish Campaign meeting
called by Isaac Litwak, their
union president and section
chairman, and plant-owner
Johnny Isaacs, services division
co-chairman . . . All 39 pledged
.. . most of them with substan-
tial increases . . . and all took
cards for the drivers in their
plants.

try out my jokes on my wife,
Sally. You know, if your wife
laughs at a joke, you can be
sure that it's either a darned
good joke, or you've got a darned
good wife. In my own case—
well, I think I've got a good
wife!" . . . Sam Klein, Bel-Aire

FOR. AT LEAST one person,
joy will not reign when ground
is broken, this fall, on the new
Jewish Hospital . . . He is the
police sergeant who, ever y
spring, comes to the offices of
the Jewish Welfare Federation

vegetable garden on the Six Mile
Rd. side . . . He was given per-
mission• again, this year . .. but
has promised to plant Only
things that will grow early . . .
so that when the ground is
broken, his vegetables won't in-
terfere . . . -The police sergeant
has been planting a garden on
the hospital grounds every year
for the past five seasons . .
and had hoped to use the site
until he retired in a couple of
years . . . For .then, he will buy
a farm and plant gardens to his
heart's content . . without

LEO POLK is an iron man in
more ways than one . . .• Only
recently, he made news with his
65th donation to the Red Cross
Blood Bank ... But greater than
that is the report that Leo took
all 150 prospect slips in the
Hand Laundries Section of the
Allied Jewish Campaign . . . cov-
ered them in three days ... and
got nice increases to boot . .
Another thing! .. . ..Everyone of
Leo's prospects were paid-up-to-
date . . because . he had gone
out in January and collected all
the pledges of last year that
were still. unpaid . . Next fall,
he'll go out again and collect
those of this year . . . And other
service • sections that are "un-
dermanned" can look to Leo as
a one-than reservoir of man-
power.
