Israel Dollar Credits

Check Campaign Assignments

Dollar credits are earned for
Israel with every cable sent that
country and marked "via Mack-
ay Wireless."
Through contractural rela-
tions, the Israel Government
jointly operates and shares in
the . profits of the only direct
telegraph service between the
United States and Tel Aviv.
Among the organizations us-
ing Mackay Wireless are- the
Israel oil refineries and Kaiser-
Frazer.
The regional representative
of Mackay Wireless in Detroit

Charlevoix Resort
Accepts .Reservations

Reservations are being ac-
cepted for the 1950 season at the
Charlevoix Beach Hotel, Charle-
voix, Mich.
The northern Michigan resort

Elath Assigned
To London Post

TEL AVIV, (JTA) — E l i a h u
Elath, Israel Ambassador in
Washington, has been named
Minister to Britain, to succeed
Dr. Mordecai Eliash who died
last March.
It is expected that Aubrey S:
Eban, Israel's permanent dele-.
gate to the United Nations will
take over the Washington post.

Loan to Jerusalem
Refused by Barclays

A Tel Aviv report states that
Barclays Bank of London has
refused to lend the city of Jeru-
salem $1,400,000 "owing to the
city's uncertain •political situa-
tion." The .fund was to be used
for new developments in jeru-
salem. The bank is reported
ready to lend Jerusalem $280,000
if the loan is guaranteed by the
Israel government.

Newcomers Club Has
Social Mixer Dance

The Young Adult Newcomers
Club will hold a Social Mixer
dance at 9 p.m., Saturday, May
27, at the Woodward Jewish Cen-
ter.

Syrians Adopt Islam
As Official Religion

The adoption of Islam as a
state religion in Syria has been
protested by leaders of all Chris-
tian communities in that coun-
try, it was reported in the Mich-
igan Catholic.
The new Syrian constitution
declared Islam would be the
tate religion and added "other
revealed religions" would be "re-
spected as' sacred."

The Jewish communities of
Saginaw and Pontiac opened
their United Jewish Appeal
drives Tlifirsday evening, May 4
with pace-setting meetings that
bettered the '49 performances
in both cities. ,
The Saginaw community, ad-
dressed by Dr. Joseph Dunner,
raised $18,925, as compared to
$16,725 last year; and Pontiac,
after hearing Yehuda Hellman,
raised $41,775. - Last year's open-
ing meeting netted $38,000 in
contributions.
The two, Michigan communi-
ties were among eight small
towns throughout the' country
that opened their UJA drives
that same evening.
