Celebrations for Shevuoth

In celebration of the festival of Shevuoth, which com-
memorates the giving of the Ten Commandments to the
children of Israel at Mount Sinai, as well as the harvest of
the first fruits in ancient Palestine, Detroit c - ongregations
have listed services for Sunday evening, May 21, and Mon-
day and Tuesday mornings, May 22 and 23.

Many Shevuoth services will
feature graduation and confir-
mation exercises, as children of
the religious schools repeat the
vows made at Sinai. (Additional

Services at Northwest Syna-
gogue will be at 6:30 p.m. Sun-
day and Monday, and at 8:45
a.m. Monday and Tuesday. On
Monday morning, the gradua-
tion exercises of the junior and
senior departments of the
Northwest Religious School will
take place. Yizkor rites will be
at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
Graduation services of the
Daily Hebrew school of Cong.
Shaarey Zedek will take place
at festival services Monday
morning when Rabbi Benjamin
E. Gorrelick will greet the grad-
uates, The s e r v i c e schedule
is 7:30 p.m. Sunday, 6 p.m. Mon-
day, and 8:45 a.m. Monday and
Tuesday. Yizkor will be recited
on Tuesday, and Rabbi Morris
Adler will preach on "Mentors,
Not Memories."
Rabbis Israel I. Halperin and
Joseph Thumin will officiate
and preach at services at Cong.
Beth Abraham, which will ba
held at 7:45 p.m. Sunday and
Monday, and at 9 a.m. Monday
and Tuesday. Yizkor will be at
10:45 a.m. Tuesday.
"The Symbol of Sivan" will be
Rabbi I. Strauss' sermon topic
at Cong. Beth Itzchock Monday.
• Tuesday he will preach on "The
Story of Ruth." Services will be-
gin at 7 p.m. Sunday and Mon-
day, and at 8:30 a.m. Monday
and Tuesday.
Cong. Bnai Zion will observe.
Shevuoth with services at 7:30
p.m. Sunday, and 9 a.m. Mon-
day and Tuesday. Rabbi S. H.
Gruskin will preach in Yiddish
on Monday, and his English
sermon on Tuesday will be on
the topic ."Remember, Lest We
Forget." Yizkor will be recited
at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Services of Cong. Bnai Moshe
will begin at- 7:30 p.m. Sunday,

"Sisterhood Serves the Com-
munity" will be the theme of
the annual Sabbath eve service
conducted by Temple Israel
women, to be held at 8:30 p.m.
this Friday, May 19, in the Lec-
ture Hall of the Detroit Institute
of Arts.
Participants will tke members
of the Sisterhood who a re
prominent in women's-•activities
in the Jewish community. Mes-
dames Robert Coggan, Samuel
B. Danto and Max Frank will
deliver the three-part sermon.
Leading the service will be
MeSdames Irwin Weisenthal,
Adalph Lowe, Louis Millman and
Irving Small. The reading from
the Torah will be conducted by
Mesdames S a m u e 1 Blacher,
Samuel Green and Reuben Le-
vine.
Mrs. Levine, religious chair-
man of the Sisterhood, heads ar-
rangements for the service. Mrs.
William P. Greenberg, Sisterhood
president, will greet the congre-
gation.

the first appearance of the new
Sisterhood Choral Group, direct-
ed by Karl W. Haas. Mrs. Mau-
rice Levin will chant the Kid-
dush.

Rabbi Leizer Levin will speak
at Shevuoth .services at 9 a.m.
Monday and Tuesday morning at
Cong. Beth Tikvah. Services also
will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday,
and Yizkor will be recited at
11:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Jewish Folk Schools
Pupils Mark Shevuoth

Parents and members of the
Labor Zionist movement are in-
vited to observe the Shevouth
program prepared by pupils of
the Jewish Folk Schools. The
celebration will be held at 9:30
p.m. Sunday, May 21 at the
Labor Zionist Institute, 13722.
Included will be a sketch
'Matan Torah', a play, "Ruth"
and a pageant, "Presentation of
Bikurim". Songs will be render-
ed, by the children's choir.
A committee of parents will
serve the traditional Shevouth
dish "blintzes". The public is
welcome to attend.

Shevuoth Celebration,
June 4 School Concert

The Sholem Aleichem Insti-
tute is planning to celebrate
Shevuoth Sunday evening, 'May
21, at the Workmen's Circle
Center, Linwood at Burlingame.
A specially-prepared • "Mach-
zur" in Yiddish and Hebrew will
be read. Featured in the musical
portion of the program will
be sopranos Florence Weintraub
and Ruth Caplan.
