AJC Takes Stock

Dr. Ruth Gruber to Address
Inventory Meeting Tuesday

With Dr. Ruth. Gruber, noted correspondent, as guest
speaker, the next Allied Jewish Campaign workers' and
contributors' meeting—at 8:30 p. m. Tuesday, May 23, at
the Northwest Hebrew Congregation—will be utilized . for
stock-taking and for an evaluation of the present standing
of the drive.
Thus far, the campaign, with only $3,100;000 sub-
scribed (as compared with $5,323,116 raised last year) , is
far behind expectations. But there are enough prospects
yet to be reached to equal last year's total—provided enough
workers carry on to reach all potential givers. The task
on Tuesday evening will ..be to revitalize the campaign's
forces to save it from failure.
At last Tuesday's report meeting, serious concern
was expressed over the present status of the drive and
workers were asked to make a serious effort to see their ,
prospects and to secure their pledges.
Next Tuesday's "inventory" meeting will be utilized
to pay tribute to the memory of Fred M. Butzel.
Reports will be submitted at this meeting by all the
campaign divisions. A quartette of workers from the Wom-
en's Division—Miss Janice Bennett, Mrs. Lou Handler, Mrs.
Harold L. Frank and Mrs. Victor Lawson—will sing mu-
sical comedy tunes with dubbed-in campaign themes.

.

MiSs Gruber, who traveled on so-called "illegal" ships which
ran the British blockade to Israel, also flew on the "Magic
Carpet JDC Airlift" from Aden to Israel with the Yemenites.
As correspondent for the New York Herald Tribune, Look,
Collier's and other' periodicals, Miss Gruber has been more
closely associated with events related to the rescue of Jews from
Europe and the establishment of the Jewish state than any
other foreign correspondent.. She is an eloquent speaker whose
addresses have, in recent years, attracted overflow audiences in
Detroit and in many comMUnities throughout the land.

Israel, World Zionists
To Form Joint Body on
Migration, Colonization

Direct JTA Teletype Wires to The Jewish News

JERUSALEM---Tremier David Ben-Gurion Tuesday reported to Parliament that the
government had reached an agreement with the World Zionist Movement for the estab-
lishment of a joint body to plan for and execute immigration projects and colonization
programs. He told the Knesset that the membership of the body will consist of four
representatives of the government and a like number from the Jewish Agency.

The Premier stated that the agreement just reached will, if ratified by the Knesset,
remain valid until the next World Zionist Congress—scheduled for December of this
yiear—when the World Zionist body must also ratify it. Mr. Ben-Gurion stated that
a preliminary survey had established that both the Agency and the government main-
tained a number of identical set-ups to deal with immigration and absorption problems.
Parliament decided to hold a full dress debate on the report.

Egyptian Statesmen 'Urge Peace with Israel

JERUSALEM (JTA)—A movement for a separate peace with Israel has i been launched by
"numerous Egyptian statesmen" • according to the Arab newspaper . Falastin, published in the
Arab-held part of Jerusalem. The paper reports -that. irnportant elements in Egypt advocate
peace with Israel even at the price of ignoring the views of other Arab states.

The popular feeling current in Cairo, the paper reports, is that every effort must be - made
by Egypt to withdraw from its "present delicate position with regard to Israel even if it means
sacrificing the whole problem of the Arab refugees and the question of compensation for Arab
property." The Arab News Agency =similarly reports that Akmed Luth Pasha, former Foreign
Minister of Egypt, said in Cairo that peace must be established with Israel since the Jewish,
state is recognized by the, United Nations.
