THE JEWISH NEWS-19 Friday, May 12, 1950 Poor Richards' Almanac `Persecuted Patriot' Hiding Behind Senator Bridges By MILTON FRIEDMAN (Copyright, 1950, Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Inc.) WASHINGTON-Perhaps t h e Federal Communications Corn- mission will some day publish a 1950 edition of "Poor Rich- ards' Almanac." The "Rich- ards," of course, is G. A. Rich- ards, wealthy radio s t at ion owner accused of broadcasting anti-Semitism. In 1948, the Radio News Club of Los Angeles, a professional association of newscasters, filed charges against Richards' poi- sonous broadcasts over KMPC, "The Station of the Stars." Thanks to the dilatory tactics of Richards' expensive 1 e g a 1 staff, the FCC is just getting around to the point where it can force a showdown. And at this point the scene shifts to the Senate It seems Sen. Styles •Bridges, of New Hampshire, is attempt- ing to high-pressure the FCC into dropping charges against poor Richards, the "persecuted patriot." Bridges is a ranking Republican on t h e strategic Appropriations Committee which pulls the FCC's purse strings. Bridges has asked Sen. Edwin C. Johnson (D-Colo.), chairman of the Interstate and Foreign Commerce Committee (which includes the FCC) to look into poor Richards' plight. Ma j or Jewish organizations are still fighting a tedious bat- tle • to revoke Richards' license. In his statements, Bridges in- directly hit at this honest Jew- ish indignation. He suggested he was afraid the FCC would impose "thought control" on Richards by denying that "loyal American" his "personal views and expressions." The climax is at hand. Hear- ings resume at Los Angeles on May 15. Meanwhile, Bridges is attempting to sabotage FCC action, asking the Senate to "carefully examine" the per- secution of poor Richards-free speech and all that, you know. He also charges political bias be- cause James Roosevelt showed an interest in the affair. In addition to KMPC, Rich- ards owns WJR, Detroit, and WGAR., Cleveland. Ironically, he calls the three, "The Good- will Stations."
