Senate's Tribute to Israel
WASHINGTON (JTA)--A resolution paying tribute to
Israel on the occasion of the second anniversary of the
Jewish state was adopted by the Senate without any objec-
tion and with the recommendation that its text be conveyed
by the State Department to Dr. Chaim Weizmann, President
of Israel. The resolution, which was supported jointly by 28
Senators, reads.
"Whereas the establishment of Israel as an independent
state on May 14, 1948, represented a triumph not only for
the Jewish world but also for all men who believe in human
freedom, justice, and dignity; and
"Whereas during the two years of its existence as a
sovereign nation, Israel has successfully defended its inde-
pendence against invading armies; and
"Whereas during such period, Israel has admitted ap-
proximately 400,000 homeless and destitute Jews from dis-
placed persons camps in Germany, Austria and Italy, from
countries in North Africa and the Middle East, and from
other countries throughout the world; and
"Whereas by its achievements during the period of its
existence as an independent state, Israel has demonstrated
that it-possesses all the necessary qualifications of a success-
ful, useful and permanent member of the family of nations;
and
"Whereas the 23rd day of April was the second anniver-
sary, according to the Hebrew calendar, of the establishment
of Israel as an independent state: therefore be it
"Resolved, that the greetings of the Senate of the United
States are hereby cordially extended to the state of Israel
upon the occasion of the second anniversary of its establish-
ment as an independent nation; and be it further
"Resolved, that the Secretary of the Senate is directed
to transmit a copy of these resolutions, through the Depart-
ment of State, to the President of Israel."
