Governor's Statement
Sunday's Anniversary Program
Two years ago, is May, 1948, the world
welcome the new State of Isral to the family of
democratic nations. Recognition of Israel by the
United States and more than 50 other nations--
marked the end, after 2000 years, of the tragedy
of Jewish national homelessness.
This year, as Israel completes its second year,
the people of - America and the citizens of Michi-
gan again join the other peoples of the world
in celebrating this victory for freedom and
democracy which enabled one more oppressed
minority to resume its independence.
Therefore, I, G. Mennen Williams, Governor
of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim
April 30, 1950, as ISRAEL DAY in Michigan
and invite all our citizens to join in observing
that day as the second anniversary of the es-
tablishment of Israel as an independent state.

decision Monday to annex the Arab part-of Palestine will lead to military action
on the part of the nations of the Arab League, a Foreign Office spokesman said
here Tuesday.
The spokesman denied that Britain had been consulted before Transjordan
anno.unced its action. Asked by newsmen whether active measures had been taken
to discourage King Abdullah from such a move, the spokesman said "No."
,
Asked to comment on Britain's attitude toward the move, the spokesman said
that the Foreign Office was studying the new situation, including its effect on the mili-
tary clauses of the Anglo-Transjordan treaty, which provide that either party must
come to the assistance of the other if it is attacked. Meanwhile, he stated, Britain will
regard Transjordan as the responsible adminiStrative authority in Arab Palestine, as
has been done hitherto.

Jewish Agency Status Disputed
JERUSALEM—Emphasizing that he does not speak as the Premier of Israel nor
as a Zionist and a member of the Zionist Actions
Committee, David Ben Gurion Tuesday clarified his attitude toward the World Zion-
ist Oro.anization and the Jewish Agency.
Addressing the Actions Committee, Ben-Gurlon said that Zionism today is based
on three pillars—the Jews who live in Israel and identify themselves with the Jewish
state, proud to give their lives for Israel, tho§e who intend to come to Israel for perma-
nent settlement, those who do not intend to ,come to Israel in the near future.
Ben-Gurion denied that confusion exists in the relations between the Israel gov-
ernment and the Jewish Agency. "The confusion of which Dr. Nahum Goldmann and
Mrs. Rose Halprin spoke exists only among them," he said. •
Meir Grossman, member of the Jewish Agency executive, defended the demand
that. the Israel government grant the World Zionist organization a charter. Such a
charter, he said, would be Of benefit not only to the Jewish state but would bring about
closer cooperation between world Jewry and Israel.
Rabbi Max Kirshblurn, Anierican Mizrachi member of
