Detroit's Histadrut Installation Check
Transferred to National Officers

Friday. April 21, 1950

I Bar Mitzvahs

MR. AND MRS. HARRY SCHUMER and LOUIS LEVINE,
leaders of the Detroit Histadrut Campaign, were tendered a
breakfast reception at the Hotel Astor in New York April 12
by the National Committee for Labor Israel. Schumer trans-
ferred the $75,000 check, second payment on account of the
1950 Detroit drive for Histadrut, to JOSEPH SCHLOSSBERG,
national chairman. Left to right: Levine, DR. GERSHON GER-
SHUNI, Histadrut delegate, Schumer, Schlossberg and Mrs.
Schumer.

500 Dine in Brotherhood at Ninth
Annual Inter-Fraternal Dinner

More than 500 men and wom-
en of Bnai Brith, the Masonic
Order and Knights of Columbus
broke bread together at the
ninth annual inter- fraternal
dinner, April 13, at Shaarey
Zedek social hall, sponsored by
the Detroit Round Table of
Catholics, Jews and Protestants.
The importance of realistic
demonstrations of interfaith
amity, such as the fraternal
banquet, was emphasized by
the three principal speakers:
Dr. Harry Nobles, pastor of
Temple Baptist Church, Wind-
sor, representing the Protest-
ant Masons; Judge John V.
Brennan of W a y n e County
Court, who spoke for the Cath-
olic Knights of Columbus, and
Rabbi Jerome D. Folk-man,
rabbi of Temple Israel, Colum-
bus., 0., formerly of Grand
Rapids, who spoke for Bnai
Brith.
Dr. Nobles pointed out the
graphic demonstration of broth-
erhood in the peaceful neighbor-
liness of the United States and
Canada. "We are brothers, not
cousins," he declared. "There is
a basic goodwill in the human
spirit," the minister continued.
"It only needs to be properly
channeled."
Judge Brennan's t a 1 k was
filled with personal recollections
illustrating how prejudice, or
the lack of it, stems from the
home. He recalled his parents'
instructions: "If you can't say
anything good about a person,
don't say anything."
"Prejudice destroys the per-
son who uses it, and puts a
mark on the person who lis-
tens to it," Judge Brennan
said. He urged those present
to make their own lives serve
as examples of brotherhood.
Rabbi Folkman pointed out
that Detroit, famous as the ar-

senal of democracy, leads the
world in brotherhood as well,
having set a widely-copied pat-
tern in amity with its inter-
fraternal banquets. He showed
how the influence of the dinner
might be spread to ever-widen-
ing circles by word-of-mouth
reports on the evening's pro-
gram.
In conclusion, he stressed that
"we. must take care that our
children are not infected by the
noxious "isms" that threaten
our American way of life."
Judge Charles Rubiner, newly-
e l e c t e d president of Cong.
Shaarey Zedek, served as toast-
master and set the theme of
the program in his opening re-
marks.
Abraham Satovsky, general,
chairman of the banquet, intro-1
duced the chairmen for the par-1
ticipating groups, each of whom I
in turn introduced the many
members who had worked on
the banquet arrangements.
Julian A. Grace, president of
the Probus Club, presented that
group's annual brotherhood
award to John J. O'Brien. Two
musical interludes, featuring
Margaret Anne Eddie of the Ob-
erlin Conservatory of Music and
the Choral Group of the Great
Lakes - Steel Management Club
concluded the program.
