Zionist Issues

The current Zionist Actions Committee session, now meeting
in Jerusalem, will be the stormiest ever held . . . It will have to
establish once and for all not only the status of the Jewish Agency,
but also its functions. . There is no secret that with regard to
the functions there are serious differences of opinion between im-
portant members of the . Israel Cabinet and members of the Jew-,
ish Agency executive. . . , These differences may not be thrashed
out in public, but they will certainly occupy a good deal of time
in discussions at closed • meetings of the Action Committee. . . .
Another "hot" issue at the Actions Committee session is the pro-
posal advanced by some Zionist leaders that the Keren Hayesod
an,d the Jewish National Fund be merged. . :In the opinion of
legal experts, the consolidation of these two funds into one is le-
gally and technically feasible without impairment of the original
aims of the JNF and those of the Keren HayeSod. ... However,'
the Zionist Organization of America, Hadassah and other branches
of the world Zionist movement definitely oppose any such merger.
On the other hand, the American section of the Jewish
AL -icy has decided to recommend to the Actions Committee that
the
. rger of the two Zionist funds be effected. . . . The recom-
menda m provides that the merged fund, be called Jewish
National Fund because of the traditional - and sentimental value
carried by the name . majority of the American section
of the Jewish Agency. .is of the opinidn that the. Agency _should
create a special fund7 raising department in charge -of the ac --
tivities hitherto encompassed by the JNF and the Keren Hayesod
. • . The other activities hitherto encompassed by the two funds
should be transferred to corresponding departments of the Jewish
Agency.

Purely Commentary

By PHILIP SLOMOVITZ

Dr. Harry Friedenwald and Early U. S. Zionist History

Death reaped a harvest in the ranks of our most brilliant
leaders in recent weeks. Dr. Milton Steinberg's passing is one of
the greatest losses to our people. Dr. Harold Lasky's death is a
loss not only to Jewry but to the entire world, and especially to
labor's cause. Last week another great figure was called to the
great beyond when Dr. Harry Friedenwald passed on at the age
of 85.
Although he had left word that there were to be no eulogies
at his final rites, and Dr. I. M. Goldman of Baltimore had to
limit himself to the reading of appropriate Psalms at his funeral,
Dr. Friedenwald's important life work did not remain unnoticed
in the press and must not be limited to a mere obituary notice.
He was one of the giants in American Jewry's cultural ranks and
his name is linked for all time in the history of the Zionist move-

ment.

In the days when Zionism was not too popular, Dr. Frieden-
wald and his entire family joined forces with the dreamers Who
aspired to see the redemption of Israel. Prof. Richard Gottheil
of Columbia University was the first president of the Zionist
Federation of America—the predecessor of the Zionist Organiza-
tion of America. Among his first associates were Dr. Stephen S.
Wise, who was the first, secretary of the American Zionist move-
ment, and another leader in the Reform rabbinate, Dr. Gustav
Gottheil, who was, with Dr. Wise and the late Dr. Maxmillian
Heller of New Orleans (father of Dr. James G. Heller of Cincin-
nati), among the few Reform rabbis who initially aligned them- -
selves with Zionism. Dr. Friedenwald became the second president
of the Zionist Federation of America, holding that office until
1912, when Louis Lipsky became chairman of the American Zion-
ist executive committee, and retaining leading posts in the 'move-
ment until his final days.
As a member of the Zionist Commission he rendered yeoman
service to the Palestinian Yishuv in 1918-19, after World War I.
He was a close associate in Zionist activities of the late Mr. JuStice
Louis D. Brandeis. He was a personal friend of Dr. Theodor Herzl
and only a handful of Jewish leaders ih the entire world matched
his great record of service to the Jewish people and to the Zionist
cause.
His remarkable gifts were not limited to Zionism. He was a
noted historian and was perhaps the best informed man ori the
subject of Jews and medicine. He was one of the world's out. ,
standing ophthalmologists and was known in his dual capacity
as _practitioner and professor (at Johns Hopkins University).
It should be noted here that his father; Jonas, was among the
noted orthodox leaders in Baltimore and-was one of the founder
of Chizuk Emunah congregation. His younger brother, Aaron, also
was a noted ophthalmologist. His son, Jonas Stein Friedenwald,
who now also serves on the faculty of Johns Hopkins University,
has the distinction of representing the third generation of oph-
thalmologists in the distinguished Friedenwald family. Other
Friedenwalds to this day hold important positions on the faculties
of- several - American universities.
This Commentator always has considered it a great privilege -
to have worked closely with Dr. Harry. Friedenwald in the Zionist
movement and among his fondest recollections will be the mem-
ories of this. great man. Of very few can it truly be said—as.
can _with justice of Dr. Harry Friedenwald: Zecher Zaddik Liv-
racha—the memory of this saint is a blessing to all future genera..
lions of American Jews.

In addition to the United Jewish Appeal, more than 60 over-
seas, national, and regional agencies which are not affiliated with
the UJA last year raised more than $40,000,000 in the United
States. . . . More than half of this sum was raised by overseas
agencies, primarily in pro-Israel drives. . The income of HIAS
last year exceeded $2,000,000, while the income of the Joint De-
fense Appeal was twice this sum. . . . The income of the Ameri-
can Jewish Congress last year was. a little over $800,000, while the
World Jewish Congress' income was about $230,000. .. . The Jew-
ish Labor Committee had an income of about $1,000,000. . . .
Among the educational institutions, the Jewish. Theological Sem-
inary topped the list with about $1,200,000 income, followed by
Yeshiva University with slightly more than a million in income.
. Among the 'organizations that raised more than a million
dollars last year is the National Jewish Welfare Board.

In his remarkable novel about the Warsaw Ghetto, "The
Wall," John Hersey has an interesting passage. Rachel Apt, per-
haps the most courageous single person in the entire story, was
being congratulated by Dr. Breithorn. When she asked "on what,'
he replied:
"On your father's recovery—not (and here came the terrible
bitterness) from his disease transmitted by lice, but from that
other one which is transmitted by - parents . . ."
(Pan Apt left the ghetto for the outside world to buy a Waft
for himself . with his fortune as an Aryan).
And the historian and archivist Noach Levinson at this point
poses the question "Jewishness? How 'recovered'?"
The announcement about the Council for Judaism (sic!)- con-
ference in Cincinnati this week-end raises the same question.
Are our "co-religionists" (another sic!) suffering from a disease
"transmitted by parents"—their fright at having "acquired" a
heritage they can not cherish? How else can anyone explain the
statement that accompanied their convention announcement that
"in the name of so-called 'Jewish' culture, which has nothing to
do with the religious values and culture of Judaism, Zionism and
other 'nationalist' elements are striving for the cultural segrega-
tion of _Jews from the national life and culture of the U. S."
. Note the sorry mess: Christians 'do not hesitate to speak of
the Judeo-Christian ideaLs which served as the foundation for our
American democracy. They would not dare. speak of. "segregation"
of Jews from the culture of our country when they accept a4
valid the Prophecies of our sages. But a minority of Jews in-
vades the sanctity of free thought in America to make foolish
charges against their fellow men.
We therefore are paging John Hersey and the archivist N. L.
in "The Wall" to serve as living witnesses, in this era which still
is within the memory of those who refuse to forget the- lesson
of the Warsaw Ghetto as well as of the miracle of Israel, against
those who dare defy humanitarian goals at a convention aimed
at harming the efforts of people who seek liberty not only. ,for
themselves but also for the downtrodden everywhere.

Several Very Noteworthy Books

Having referred again to "The Wall" and already having re-
viewed in this column Prof. Abraham Heschel's "The Earth Is the

Lord's," your Commentator would like to call to the attention
of his readers the following notable books which will be treated
at greater length later on:
Dr. Immanuel Velikovsky's magnificent work, "Worlds in Col-
lision," which provides interesting reasoning in support of the
validity of the Biblical story that Joshua caused the sun to stand
still during the battle of Jericho. (MacMillan).
"The Other Father," a new novel by Laura Z. Hobson, author
of "Gentleman's Agreement" (Simon and Schuster).
"Young Hearts," a novel of modern Israel by David Malet2
(Schocken).
"James Madison: Father of the Constitution" by Irving Brame
(Bobbs-Merrill).
"This Nation Under God" by U. S. Senator Elbert D. Thomas
(Harper).

Strauss Co.)

sophical Library).
