Britain Frowns
On Arab League
Sanction Threat

The Jewish News
LONDON - The British gov-

ernment has given King Abdul-
lah of Transjordan a cautiously-
worded reply to his persistent
queries as to the Foreign Of-
fice's position on the A r a b
League threat to apply eco-
nomic sanctions against any
state which negotiates a sepa-
rate peace treaty with Israel.
With an eye toward the
Anglo - Egyptian treaty t a 1 k s,
which are in the delicate pre-
liminary stages at present, the
Foreign Office told the Trans-
jordan monarch that Britain
does not approve of the League's
resolution and that it is the
British government's view that
the Arab states will have to
negotiate with Israel on a final
settlement either now or later.
This reply, it is believed in
official circles, is sufficient for
Abdullah to resume his talks
with Israel without involving
the British government. It does
not, however, answer. the King's
query as to what Britain will
do in the event that he is placed
under an economic ban.

Arabs Insist on DP
Talks Before Peace Terms
TEL AVIV--,(JTA)-The Israel

Government rejected an Arab
offer to discuss peace terms only
after prior consideration of the
return of the Arab refugees to
Israel. (In Geneva, Claude de
Boissanger, chairman of the UN
Conciliation Commission for Pa-
lestine, said that Egypt, Syria
and Lebanon would talk peace
only on this basis.)
Final efforts of the Con-cilia-
tion. Commission to initiate ne-
gotiations between Israel and
the Arab states collapsed when
the Arab League declined to
enter into the negotiations un-
less Israel first agreed to ac-
cept - the 1947 partition resolu-
tion-the very same resolution
which the Arab League had
sought to destroy by armed con=
flirt in 1948.
Roger Garreau, president of
the UN Trusteeship Council, ad-
dressed an invitation to the Is-
rael Government to send repre-
sentatives to Athens where he
intends to start discussions on
implementation of the terms of
the Jerusalem statute as adopt-
ed by the Trusteeship Council
in Geneva earlier this month.

Government Starts Hearing
On Bernadotte Assassination
JERUSALEM - (JTA) - Hear-

ings began April 17 • by a special
government committee on the
circumstances surrounding the
assassination of Count Folke
Bernadotte, UN Palestine me-
diator, which took place on
Sept. 17, - 1948, in Jerusalem.
The special committee set up
by the Israel government ques-
tioned military and civilian wit-
nesses. The committee is study-
ing documents and police re-
ports concerning the circum-
stances under which the late UN
mediator was assassinated by
extremists who made good their
escape.

Travel Agents Pledge
Drive Against Resorts
With Bias Guest Policy

- Condemning discrimination in
vacation resorts as "a practice
that is un-American and un-
democratic," a group of travel
and resort agents has been or-
tanized as the "Travel Agents
Committee to Combat
by Resorts and Hotels."
The new group, under the
joint chairmanship of Alfred F.
Schmeiss of A. T. Henderson . Co.,
James A. Sullivan of Wm. L.
Strauss and Son, and Karl Tau
sig of Paul TauSig and Son, has
been described as "a major ef-
fort in calling a halt to vacation-
time prejudice." Its immediate
aim, according to the three co-
chairmen, is "to launch an edu-
cational campaign againSt resort
discrimination and at the same
time to advise patrons that cer-
taM hotels pursue "this undemo-

eratie ptdicy."

Vandenberg Withholds
Judgment on Mundt Bill

Senator A. H. Vandenberg a
Michigan, answering- a telegram
of the Detroit Women's Division,
American Jewish Congress, ask-
ing his opinion on the Mundt-
Ferguson Bill, declared that he
was withholding final judgement
until the measure reaches the
Senate.
"I have a deep conviction that
our "Bill of Rights" should not
protect a citizen who is found
by the courts to be responsive to
orders from a foreign Govern-
ment• or agitating for the over-
thro• of constitutional govern-
ment by force. I have an equally
deep conviction that we must
proceed with caution in exer-
cising any such. restraints lest
we start chain reactions which
could grow into a "police state",
Senator Vandenberg's telegram
concluded.

Truman's Greetings

it has adhered under complex
circumstances of the modern
world, is- an inspiration to all of
us who believe in the brother-
hood of man. This faith em-
bodies principles which find an
accord in the minds and hearts
of all of us who are devoted to
the extension of democratic
practices and beliefs."
