Mr. by Shaarey Zedek members in the synagogue's religious and educational activities. He paid tribute to the memory of de- parted members. Plans by the, Shaarey Zedek to honor the 70th birthday of Dr. A. M. Hershman, its rabbi emeritus, were announced by Rabbi Adler in his address. He informed the membership that the board of trustees had de- cided, as a mark of honor to Dr. Hershman, to publish a book of his outstanding sermons, and to honor him at a special con- gregational gathering. Rabbi Adler also called the attention of the membership to the approaching 90th anniver 7 sary of the 'synagogue, which will be marked on Simchat Torah, 1951. NW Women Hold' Sabbath Eve Service CHARLEScRUBINER Rubiner, who served as vice- president of the congregation for three years, succeeds Harry M. Shulman. Dr. Leonard Sidlow was elect- ed vice-pfesident; Maurice Sel- igman, secretary; Hyman Saf- ran, treasurer; Theodore Baruch, Louis Berry, Albert Green and Hyman A. Keidan„members of the board. The new .officers will assume their posts on . July 1. In his report as president, Mr. Shulman told of the progress at- tained by the synagogue whose membership has increased from 1,089 when he took office three years ago to 1,314 families. He reported that the adult classes had grown in attendance from 100 to 600, the Hebrew school from 125 to 475 and the Sunday School to nearly 1,500. Shulman announced that the congregation had accePted, the resignation of its educational director, Rabbi Benjamin H. Gorrelick,- who has indicated a desire to return to active service in the rabbinate. Rabbi Morris Adler addressed the meeting which -was marked. by a record attendance. In the course of his address, he ex- pressed deep satisfaction over the increasing interest shown Rabbi Frain Hits Religious Tracts In Newspapers . Newspapers were told to stick to reporting the news and to leave religion to the church and synagogue in a sermon by Rabbi Leon Fram of Temple Israel at sabbath eve services Fr i d a y, April 14. Rabbi Fram attacked _the ap- pearance in newspapers of re- ligious tracts, particularly those preceding the recent Lenten season; "The Greatest Story Ever 'Told," by Fulton Oursler, which appeared in the Detroit Free Press; and "The Trial of Jesus from a Lawyer's View- point," by Judge Frank A.. Pic- ard, carried in the Detroit News. Oursler's series was described as an insidious instrument for propagating hatred. Rabbi Fram expressly noted the quotes wherein the Jewish High Priest is planning the extermination of all Christians, something, „Rabbi Fram said, for which `,,,there is no factual evidence. ! Rabbi Fr am praised Judge Picard for his record as a liberal and his work as chairman of the Michigan branch of the American Christian P a 1 estine Committee. However, he termed Picard's series "inflammatory," claiming that in the final ana- lyses it leaves the Jews to bear the burden of guilt for Christ's death. The rabbi scored newspapers for publishing in the form of a religious tract, hate propaganda that they would "never dream of publishing in their news or editorial columns." Northwest Hebrew Cong.
