Prof. Slosson Advocates' Allocation
Of Marshall Plan Funds to Israel
In an enlightening lecture on
the history of the Middle East
and on geographical conditions
which affect the new state of
Israel, Dr. Preston Slosson,
chairman of the history depart-
ment of the University of Mich-
igan, speaking before a large as-
sembly of the Zionist Organiza-
tion of Detroit on March 29,
strongly endorsed Israel's in-
clusion in assistance that is be-
ing given Marshall Plan lands.
Prof. Slosson advanced the
view that money spent in that
fashion "will never be wasted,
it will return enormous interest
in the pacification of the world."
While he declared that the
interest of this country in Israel
is strengthened by the numeri-
cal voting strength of American
Jews who therefore are a vital
political factor, Prof Slosson
stated that there are many rea-
sons for the U. S. interest in
Zionism. The major factor, he
said, is that "when we were
small- boys in Sunday School, we
were saturated in the history
and legends of Palestine. This
fact, that Palestine forms the
mental hinterland in American
thinking, has inspired our in-
terest in Zionism." He said that
the same motives applied to
Byron's joining the fight for the
freedom of Greece, because he
received a classical education.
Dr. Slosson said that in ad-
dition to assisting Israel eco-
nomically, Jews should not
hesitate to act politically, by
writing to Congressmen and
newspapers in behalf of the
Jewish state, and added that
the fear of dual allegiance is
not justified. While advocating .
a liberalized DP bill for the
admission of Jews to this
country, he said that Israel
im important as a refuge for
those who need it and that
those who support Israel are
assisting the cause of advanc-
ing the Middle East and striv-
ing for world peace, thus kill-
ing two birds with one stone.
Predicting a good future for
Israel, whose existence, he said,
is "assured and acknowledged,"
Dr. Slosson said he did not be-
lieve -that a war would be re-
newed because the Arabs were
previously unsuccessful, because
the Arab League is less a reality
now and because none of the
great powers want war and rec-
ognize that a war in the Mid-
dle East could break out into
another world conflict. "Sooner
or later, the existing boundaries
will be recognized," he added.
If he were a Jew, he said, he
would . prefer to live in the
Greater Zion of the United
States because of the vaster op-
portunities available here. Nev-
ertheless, he is a Zionist because
of the justice of Jewish claims
and because the horrors of the
last war made it necessary that
a homeland be established for
Jews who need it. Among other
reasons he advanced for the
justice of the Jewish claims to
the ancient land is the existence
of a strong Jewish community
in Palestine and the ability Jews
have shown to make real the
Biblical prophecy that Jews
would make the land "blossom
like a rose."
